I've poked around the SW&D forum a bit, but for the most part, the style isn't quite me, so want to hear some thoughts from the guys over here on denim, in particular coated denim.

I've seen some nice pairs from various makers that takes a dark denim and then finish it with a resin or wax coating. I must admit, I'm a bit on the fence and can't decide whether I think it elevates a traditionally casual garment with an elegant finish/detail (so it may be used in a more upscale setting) or whether it's just gimmicky/unnecessary (and will look more tacky the more you try and dress it up).

In particular, was thinking about these:

or these:

http://www.earnestsewn.com/product.a...210&nr=12&in=5

or even one of these (if I can find a store with my size in either):

Actually, I prefer what Dior Homme did.
They applied irregular resin on their older jeans. So some parts are coated and some are not.
They did it to their T shirts, polo and dress shirts too. Although it peels in their polo T.

What you've shown is what most manufacturers do, including Dior, which is coating the jeans uniformly with a coating, which doesn't necessary shine. The problem with that, is that after some time, the damn thing comes out! The wax in my old Helmut Lang jeans have started to come out and its not like it peels, its like someone painted them with some dye and now its coming out. I thought of washing the jeans but that would probably means the entire wax comes out.

Dont have the problem with the Diors. The Diors BTW look like the same resin they capture mosquitos in Jurassic Park.

Applying different colour wax to jeans may or may not work. Raf did it a few seasons back. He did silver dye on jeans. Some are more subtle. My MMM indigo has a silverish tone.

Interesting. I wonder if it has to do with all over coating vs. partial coating or Dior just using better was/a better process than Helmut Lang (might depend on whether it's pre-Prada/Theory HL or not).

What are your thoughts on places you'd wear those out to vs. other jeans vs. feeling the need to wear more formal trousers?

You can re-coat them, if they are wax coated. Wax coated denim is meant to me weatherproof. Once it starts to wear of off you re-coat.... http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=19672 Most, like Dior Homme, don't seem to use wax but polyurethane. It shouldn't come off all at once when washed, just bits here and there.

I like the look. I don't think of it as "elevating" denim, nor as a gimmick; it's just another option. I have a pair that I tend to wear whenever it rains.

Er, I think it was never said to be coated with wax. Can't imagine how that would survive wear and tear. It coated by polyurethane and similar substance.
