I have Alden wingtip boots with speed hooks and without. I really thought I would like the "without" better but after use, speed hooks are the way to go, for me at least.

Well, black shell isn´t a huge thing either (especially in homeopathic dosage). Nevermind.

Exactly, it is the 404 and is a stock model you can buy from any Alden retailer.

Thanks a lot guys, is the 404 the one that is truly dark brown and not the brick-brown color?

The 404 is dark brown Kudu leather with a lug sole, the 403 is dark brown chromexcel leather with the standard sole. Go to www.theshoemart.com, and search on each model number to see clear pictures. (The 405 is the brick-brown original model)

That said, would still love another pair in black. Originally didn't pull the trigger b/c the black was lady-calf, so much softer and prone to wrinkling. Someone recently sold a black used pair on Ebay for $25 less than new, so suspecting these may be sold out.

that would be me who picked up the black tankers. shoes were pretty much new, and @ $450 was a good price compared to $495 plus shipping.

We had a 17 year old come in with his Mom and buy a pair of John Lobbs last month.
