What is chattering

I am looking at a pair of shoes online. The seller describes patternation on the leather as "chattering" It sounds like a defect in the leather-they are C&J shoes.Originally Posted by gyasih

I have heard this seller mention this before. I actually have C&J's that have this, it is a subtle almost tire tread pattern in the grain of the leather. It looks like it may have come this was from the machinery in the tannery. It is not noticeable when you wear them, but if you inspect the shoe you can see it.

My pair that have some of this are black. Shoes that are likely to age and get a scuff, or five over their lifespan anyway? I would say save your $90. This is coming from somebody who isn't a bargain hunter as well.

Although I have never come across the term, I think I know what it means.
Unlike an ordinary sewing machine (for fabric) which uses a presser foot, a leather sewing machine uses a metal wheel to carry the leather underneath the needle:

You need the right amount of pressure from the wheel, as to transport the leather smoothly, but if the machine is not correctly set-up and there is too much pressure from the wheel, it can leave a mark (like car tyres) on top of the leather.
Seems to be particular problem with shell cordovan .
