No, he's right. A martini has a fixed meaning- gin+ vermouth. It's a specific cocktail. I don't suddenly start making, say, a cosmopolitan with brandy and claim that the new drink with a completely different character should be called the same thing, now do I? No. It would be stupid. How 'bout a gin daiquiri? Daiquiri's just a word, it can mean whatever you want it to mean, right? Once you go down the road of saying martini is just a word with no meaning, you open the door to cocktails like chocolate martinis, pumpkin martinis, ect. Stuff that's not made with gin, vermouth, vodka, doesn't share any of the three classic martini garnishes- In short, you make the word completely meaningless. yes, language changes. But it's not completely fluid. If it was, as you claim, "Go *************" could mean anything I want it to mean. It could mean that I want you to live long and prosper. But you know that's not what I would mean by that, right? Words have meaning. Martini is taken. Find something else. There's a movement afoot to give the vodka martini an identity all it's own, calling it the Stalini. why not try that one? I have nothing against the cocktail per say (other than the fact that I regard most any cocktail made with vodka as inferior to something made with a spirit that has flavor, but YMMV on that), but I do have an issue with people calling it a martini. It's not. As for the arrogance bit, is it really a point of shame to use the language correctly and to ask that others do so? or r u in flavor of tiping lik this?! i mean, if people wnt to typ like thier txtg its okay right! Edit: just should add that "vodka martini" is borderline. vodkatini is better, but if you're flat up calling it a martini, the above applies.

I am both a pedant and a pretty serious cocktail geek, and I am fine with 'vodka martini.' It's fine, really -- the vodka is a qualifier that the drink ordered is not, in fact, a straight martini. It's something else. I think many get upset because the vodka martini has supplanted the martini to the point that a martini made with gin is no longer the de facto standard, and they direct that hostility to the phrase 'vodka martini,' which, truly is no threat. That sort of qualification has a long history in cocktails -- witness the Brandy Alexander, which is a variant of the Alexander, made with gin. That sort of alteration doesn't threaten the martini or open the door to any combination of things being called a martini -- it's just the swapping out of a single spirit with another spirit. There's no spirit called 'Chocolate' or 'Pumpkin' that I know of. My distress about the martini is the extra-dry malarky and the accompanying rituals as to what you do with the bottle of vermouth when you drink one. I really cannot tell the difference between a gin stirred over ice and served neat and one prepared the same but with a drop of vermouth -- to me, then, it is just snobbish sophistry that denigrates what is actually a good cocktail. Even more annoying (borderline unforgiveable) is the calling of any cocktail by the name Martini. That is ignorant and ridiculous. But the most annoying thing of all is someone who orders one of those 'look at the vermouth as you pour the gin' martinis AND who rails against vodka martinis. Punishing myself tonight a little bit. We split a bottle of wine over dinner, the usual 1.5 glasses for her, the rest for me. She didn't want any more and I'm feeling very down due to our huge, healthy cat dropping dead. Everyone else is asleep and I'm almost done a 40 oz of Ultimat vodka. Very clean tasting but sure I'm going to regret this in the morning.

Sorry to hear about your Cat, Pio. Now, he is in the bar in the sky!! Did he have health problems? Speaking of that, I am worried about my son...I mean cat. He weighs 17 pounds and his doc told me he has to go on a diet. Thing is he doesn't really eat that much.

That's what's killing me. He was only eight! Never sick a day in his life and seriously the the Shaq of cats. Been doing some reading and apparently some purebred ragdolls have heart problems that go undetected. He obviously died suddenly and without pain. I'm happy for that.

God damn that drives me nuts. Don't wash my ice with vermouth. Its ridiculous and these snobs go to ridiculous lengths with this crap. My biggest peve is the ongoing effort to replace the gin martini with the vodka martini as the drink served when a "martini" is asked for. I shouldn't have to specify gin.
