Herringbone shirt with...?

How do folks recommend wearing a herringbone shirt? Is it thought of as more or less formal then a plain cotton shirt? Right now I'm wearing a wool flannel jacket, a grenadine tie and a plain white cotton dress shirt. It seems to me the shirt is too plain, and that a shirt with texture like a herringbone would go better with the fabric of the tie and jacket.

Thoughts?

I think they are more formal but the bigger issue is that it adds texture #3 to your outfit with the small texture of the grenadine tie (a detailed, smallish repeating pattern) against a similarly smallish repeating pattern of the shirt. The jacket provides a texture contrast to your detailed tie and plain shirt in that flannel is just fuzz. I would probably not wear the herringbone shirt with the grenadine tie or if I did I would do it with a traditional wool jacket.

I would wear the shirt with a solid colored smooth finished silk tie and the same flannel jacket however.

Thanks for the input. Gives me something to think about with the shirt. But I can't wear a smooth silk tie with a flannel jacket, seems off to me, the textures are too much of a contrast.

I think a herringbone shirt would go fine with a flannel jacket. Plain herringbone isn't any more formal than poplin, and poplin is perfectly fine with that outfit. As for the tie, I think a knit tie would be more appropriate for a more casual flannel jacket than grenadine would, if you still want the texture.

While your reasoning makes some sense I just think the scale of all these patterns is so small that no one will notice unless they're uncomfortably close to you.
