What is your opinion of shirt darts?

If darts help your shirt fit better then they are a good thing. I would never get darts because my waist isn't small enough to warrant them. Taking in the side seams does more than enough for me.

..but I am not sure why they would make a shirt look custom; I think Mr. K. for one has indicated that there is no need for them in a bespoke/custom shirt.

A good tailor tapers shirts without the use of darts.

Depends on your drop.

If you have a big drop you'll struggle to get the required fit just from the side seams. I think even AK has alluded to this.

Best $10 tailor job you can do on a shirt. I hate the excess fabric that hangs out. Darts work for me.

+1. With large drop they can help, but otherwise they are pointless.

Neither cheap nor tacky.
There exist, of course, tacky darted shirts; just as it does happen with non darted shirts.

I have shirts that came with darts in them. I usually buy extra slim fit which does not require darts.

Whenever I buy a shirt that I just have to have but it fits a little too wide, I get darts put in. Obviously, only two in the back.

I think that's correct, but thought that that would have to be some kind of steep drop.

My feeling exactly.

In my youth I used to have a drop of 12 (42/30) and that was before I ever hit a gym (although the fashion at the time [80's] was relaxed fit, so I never had to worry about darting etc.)

These days big drops seem quite common so darts appear to be quite prevalent. A really skilled tailor could probably take side seam adjustment a fair way, but eventually darts are going to be the only real solution.

A local bespoke shirt maker who has a few pro-sport clients has said it's an issue for him, as they always want a second skin fit (against his advice).
