I shouldn't have called your breeder out. I was trying to make a larger point about show dogs and the dangers of breeding dogs that adhere to the physical standard, but not necessarily the mental.

Temperament is a funny thing. It is always confused with personality, "Oh, my dog has a great temperament, look how happy he is." That's incorrect. Temperament is simply the mental capacity of the dog to perform his task. Unfortunately, it is a somewhat nebulous and difficult thing to measure which is why trials exist that test the dog's breed worthiness. Many would argue that even those are pale imitations of actual work. I don't disagree.

It is also a very easy thing to lose in a breeding program. Though show breeders delude themselves into believing their lines still posses it, all evidence is to the contrary. That is why the Border Collie group, the JRT people and the Cav club fought AKC recognition so hard. They knew it meant the ruin of their beloved breeds.

Not sure it's fair to compare circumcision and castration. One removes the foreskin with no apparent physical or mental damage, the other removes the ability of the animal to produce hormones necessary for it's maturity. The growth plate info alone would be enough to stop me.

As Norcal pointed out, the attitudes are changing with regards to spaying/neutering. I'm hardly dogmatic about it but do like to point out that what we've been taught over the last 20 years doesn't hold up any longer.

Any way, your dogs; your business.

I didn't know people took their dogs so seriously. Dayum
You should see the tropical fish people go at it.

This I agree with. To spay or neuter or to not spay or neuter is up to each owner.

Lefty, I don't know where you live but pretty much every city I go to I see stray dogs.

As to the fighting breeds, if you want one thats great but I personally don't care for them. I'm really not impressed with the above story about the dog that killed the other dog. Or even the my dog is ready whenever the neighborhood dogs feel like a little scrap or however it was worded, Warrior mind set what bull ****!

I know don't blame the breed blame the owner but why does it seem like the wrong kind of owner ends up with that type of dog? Sure they can be a great pet if you put the time and effort into it. The problem is that 90%+ of people don't put the time and effort into having a pet.

Naturally speaking... What animal... dog or reptile or human would it be deemed proper to have their reproductive organs taken out? Of course this is a generalization.... but this is common sense here. Most people spay and neuter to make their animals unable to reproduce... All of that temperment, health mumbo jumbo could be argues in a variety of ways, each having equal balance. Lets move on!

Average town.

When I was a kid we all let our dogs wander. They would pack up and do whatever dogs do for the day. They were, however, pretty good dogs and they knew that if they got out of hand they would get a swift kick ********** from the closest person. And anyone was allowed to discipline a neighbourhood dog if he was acting like an asshole. But it's against the law now to let your dog wander so I see very few strays.

Not sure I follow this but if you're saying castration prevents unwanted pregnancies, surely there's a more humane approach. Maybe a lead?

It might seem like bullshit to you, but obviously you have never lived with a Dog of Courage. An example: One day I was walking Zuma across a nearby park. Two Miniature Pinschers ran up barking and growling furiously. Their owners were screaming hysterically, sure their little guys were rushing to their doom. Zuma stalked by, ignoring them with lordly disdain. "Oh, he's so sweet and gentle!" they exclaimed, speaking of Zuma. "If they only knew..." thought I.

Nothing. I can guarantee it! If Tosas weren't very tolerant of being teased by children, my fool of a stepson would have been dead or mangled about 14 years ago! Besides I knew the dog in question well. He was much gentler, more benign dog than his brother Dempsey, whom I owned. Some people said Dempsey was the most intimidating dog they'd ever met, but, God, how I loved that glorious, magnificent creature.

a lead would definitely work, but in this day and age where animal owners are lazy, castration is said to be the only way. I don't agree with it myself.

Kind of my point. If someone is incapable of controlling their animal maybe they shouldn't have that animal.
