While in London and Milan recently I tried on a lot of jackets. When I tried on 3 button jackets and buttoned the middle button many times the SA would also button the top button.

Is this some new UK/Euro trend? Perhaps something to do with shorter jackets?

Anyone else had this experience recently?

Whatever the SA says or does, do the opposite. Then you will be sprezz.

I always do it. I'm English. Been doing it since 1980. Three roll two are pointless to me, just get a 2.

Top? Nothing wrong with that. It's the bottom that's an issue.

OTOH SA aren't always the best people to take pointers from.

Did the roll end at the top button? Depending where you were shopping, a lot of SA's aren't necessarily knowledgable.

Maybe the SA is doing it to get a better view of the fit through the chest.

This. There are legitimate 3 button jackets, which is what OP may have been browsing. Only if the top button is rolled into the lapel is it a legitimate 3/2, which means don't button the top button.

I guess I am so used to "The Rule" that you never button the top or bottom button of a 3 button jacket. But on some of these shorter, unlined, somewhat trim cut jackets, buttoning the top two buttons seems to actually look OK.

Is the middle button rule just for a 3-2 classic cut jacket?

Did I not get the memo?

Top down sometimes always never.

Unless you have a true three button, you can't button the top button if the roll of the lapel is to between the top and 2nd button (i.e., 2.5), and to a much lesser extent the roll is to the 2nd button, without making it look horrible. You're basically forcing a button point that was not intended. Just check the GILT models for their suits.

I never button the top of any kind of 3-button jacket. Buttoning the top of a 3-button jacket looks too uptight. I also like to unbutton my jacket when seated and fastening and unfastening 2 buttons is too much of a hassle.

I've no idea where you heard this rule, certainly not on SF. The rule has always been, as Ianiceman says above, "sometimes, always, never", unless of course the coat is roll-2 or roll-2.5.

You don't want to be caught in a Euro-fad do you?
