Knots for Stubborn Ties

What knots do you guys use for ties that just will not have skinny knots because of poor material, excess thickness, etc? I tried FIH, Prince Albert (double FIH) and both looked awful. Actually ended up settling for a half Windsor because it ended up the smallest.

I think you answered your question here. It sounds like by trying a number of knots you've broken in the stiffness of the tie (how else would you get a small half Windsor?) Now go back to the FIH and try again.
