The Official Wine Thread

Tonight was an '08 Nickel & Nickel Searby vineyard RRV chardonnay. Really very nice.

tonight was an Italian Vermentino, I can't think of any other type of wine I'd turn to for $10. I used part of it for consumption, and part of it to make dinner (mussels w/ chorizo, wine, cilantro, shallots, tomato paste, all over a little pasta)

Costamolino "Argiolas" Vermentino

Two nights running, had an 08 Haute Tubee from Stefania wines. Still one of the best red blends I've had for $20 bucks.

So I have greatly increased my Frenchie content. In fact, out of the last 30 bottles I've purchased, 22 were Frenchie. Now I'm going to do a few more whites, Frenchie and otherwise. Vino verdhe, Gruner-Veltliner, Verdicchio...we shall see.

Malvira does a very nice Favorita... never gonna be $10 though. Nice.

2004 Capanna Brunello di Montalcino

Bottle bought at Gomestar's recommendation of the '04 vintage. Man, what a wine.



Wasn't planning on posting tasting notes on this wine, because frankly people have been kind of douchey with tasting note drama in here lately. But this wine has blown me away, seriously. The color was striking immediately. It had a brick/orange tinted rim variation. Something you'd expect from a 12 yr old Bord, but not a 6 yr old Brunello. Really interesting to me, as I assumed the bottle needed another year or two before it showed well. Tight at first, with mostly just red fruit notes. Some floral components as well. After it had opened up, beautiful leather and earth notes really made this wine great. Slightly spicy, with firm tannins and a perfect amount of acidity that made this wine great with the food I was having.

Would be more than happy to drink this one again and again.

happy to hear it worked out, a great Brunello is just one of those classic wines that is hard to beat.

mmm- KW, I've had that vintage... the brick red anything woudl concern me a bit... I don't recall seeing anything like that but wasn't looking for it. Nonetheless, a very nice bottle.

Had a bottle of 2004 Luce Toscana last night. Great wine.

For those of you in Atlanta, don't laugh when I say this, but the best wine store in the city is in the Ansley Mall Kroger. Incredible selection (especially CA) and service. Ask for Steve.

Walter Hanzel 2007 Pinot Nior RRV "Southern Slope" $43

Roessler 2007 Pinot Nior SRH "Clos Pepe" $35

Looking forward to enjoying these over the coming months.

At a freakin' Kroger? Jackpot

Funny! The Jewel in Oak Park/River Forest has some nice wines as well such as the 07 James Isosceles for around $60 and Grigch Hills in the $40 to $50 range...all stored in temp controled UV glass front cases! Granted still too steep for my wallet...but hey!

Kistler? At Kroger? Noice.

The Tom Thumb near my house has a small glass case with some pretty nice stuff.

Now, the Central Market in Plano has some REALLY nice stuff (LaTour magnums $XXXX, AF Gros Richebourg $7XX, etc.), but then their wine department is larger than lots of wine stores I know of.

I don't think any of them have Kistler though, which is a mailing-list-only wine, and their prices on high end wine is pretty outrageous. Like maybe they buy it at retail and then mark it up from there kind of outrageous.
