Black or brown for briefcase/work bag?

I'm in my mid-20's and graduating from law school this year. I'll be working for a big corporate firm in NYC next year. I'm getting a soft shell, leather business bag for work - kind with both a handle and a strap - and am trying decide between brown or black. I'm pretty fashion forward and will likely be wearing mostly navy blue and dark gray suits. Any reason to prefer one color over the other? Black seems a tad stodgier and less eye-catching, but I don't know.

Do you mostly wear black or brown shoes and belts? I would get the color I wear most often.

Well, I'm still in school now, so really haven't put together much of a wardrobe. I'd guess I'd be wearing both colors - I think dark brown shoes with a navy suit look pretty slick. But I've also heard that it's not really essential to match up bag colors with shoes/belts.

I thought I needed the same thing and in the same situation as you. Once I started work I realized that it is best, for me at least, to wait a bit and figure out how much stuff I am typically carrying around, etc... I am happy I did not get one and 6 months in am still trying to figure out what type of bag I would get.

Brown will develop a patina over time and will look nicer (if that is a look that you like.)
Black will just be black.
Brown will get noticed, black will be invisible.

med/dark brown, even if you plan to wear black shoes everyday

Could you order it from Hermes, in green?
