Bought an Alligator belt from brooks brothers (original price 898, on sale for 670), I have done an exhaustive search on this, because I want to keep this belt for as long as possible, and I've read everything from "Never apply anything to alligator belts or else they could get destroyed" to "apply exotic leather conditioner once a month or else the belt can dry out and get permanently damaged". I have no clue on how to take care of this thing. Anyone have experience with these belts? Help!

Reptilian skins are built to last. Wear with gusto, and in good health.

The reason why you are getting different opinions about their care is that there is usually two components. Anything reptillian is invariably lined with another leather, such as calf or peccary.

What you can do is to occasionally wipe it with a light coat of conditioner, starting with the lining, then simply buff the front with a slightly damp cloth to restore lustre.

There is no need for exotic leather cleaners, just nothing harsh. In NZ, my folks have a tradition of using lanolin, which is widely available. Heat and scratches are more likely to ruin crocodile skins.

I think Malaysia and many countries near it do make and sell croc belts, since they rear their own crocs.

Forget about all those crap about how branded stuff are built to last, have better quality control or their artisans are more skilled than your local products etc. You are talking about a belt here. I think the locals can do a croc belt which can last as long as a BB or even Hermes belt.

Just becareful of who you buy from. Understand that Thailand do sell fake croc stuff, which are very difficult to differentiate from the real stuff unless you cut it up.

Brooks Bros sends their items internationally for a fixed shipping rate, regardless of number of items purchased or their values. Not sure about south-east asia though since credit card fraud cases are quite high.

Just do a mock check out to verify.

I wont buy the croc shoes from the locals. Nothing to do with fakes but I doubt their skills in croc shoe making is that good. Buying croc belts and wallets should be safe.

On that note, dont know whether BB is 'branded'. And I cant imagine BB selling genuine croc products. If it is made in Italy, I doubt it will sell at 1.1 k, even if it is made by BB.
