What do Germans wear?

Hi, all! I'm going be studying abroad in Germany (Stuttgart) this summer. I just want to know what Germans usually wear for formal events, lectures at the university, casual wear, etc. At this point, the only things I'm sure I'm going to pack are: lots and lots of shirts, a couple of jeans, chinos, a blazer, a navy suit, couple of ties, belts, brown oxfords, running shoes, my normal gym attire, and personal furnishings. Basically, my look is sort of American prep. Is there a certain look that Germans tend to go for? Thanks.

I noticed that you mentioned formal events in your post -- did you mean business, or did you truly mean formal? Because if you did mean the latter, I'd say that a dinner jacket is probably needed for the formal events.

A. Lange & SÃ¶hne supplied the military with timepieces. So did Union and such from around the Dresden area.

Don't worry too much about what to bring. Doesn't matter at all in terms of what people will think of you.

I work in a government department and on office days could easily go to work in jeans+jumper.

In student environments it's even less important - in fact depending on where you enrol, dressing well will be seen with suspicion by many, such as in Berlin. Stuttgart is not that leftist, but you can still get away with anything. Lectures at uni are T-shirt more than shirt affairs.

On the other hand, this also means that is quite easy to impress people with one's outfit.

Perhaps. I don't know; I haven't been to the US in over a decade. Germans certainly dress less well in general than Italians and French.

Is it Stuttgart University your enrolling at? Which campus?

I'm not sure yet. The actual program is year-long and starts during fall. I want to be there earlier so I can adjust to the surroundings, polish up my German, and do a bit of traveling before classes start. I might actually just go to Technische UniversitÃ¤t MÃ¼nchen (Munich), instead.
