Bespoke Dads

If you are a father who bespeaks fairly consistently, have you ever gotton your son(s) fitted for anything? Also, do you think, or know if your son(s) share the same enthusiasm for clothes and will use your same tailor in his generation?

No sons (yet). Not sure what I would do. Probably would not bespeak him anything until after college. Too much bodily change until then to make it worth while. I would be happy to give him some of my old stuff if it could be altered to fit.

My son is six. The closest to this that I've come so far is to have a set of plain sterling buttons for a navy jacket engraved with his four initials rather than my three. My thought is to have them transferred to a jacket for him for, or maybe after, college.

Nature vs. nurture? It’s tough to say. When you’re DNA is this ******* crispy. And as a young’n you kicked it in Pari. Your kid probably geeks out over trivial ****. Like butterflies. Or clouds. Or glitter. My kid gets wide eyed. When we discuss the merits of white jeans in winter. Monochromatic palettes. And well worn DB’s in exclusive colorways. We took him out of school 2 years ago. So he could blog full time. His diffusion line for Heelys hits Target next month. Apparently it’s Jil inspired. I’ve only seen the sketches. You probably heard him at SXSW. Moderating a panel with Lil Gevi. And that dude who created Mad Men’s son. Talking about the merits of social media. And musing on what it means. To inspire a generation of designers. Who made names for themselves. Before any of these Rugrats were even born. They say rents live vicariously through their seed. I’d have to agree. I tweet vicariously through him. Because he has more followers than me. While you’re in a Town & Country. Stuck in traffic. Taking your worthless brat to soccer practice. I’m speeding in a Hummer limo. With my kin. And Uncle Karl. Popping bottles. Making our way to the front row. This really shouldn’t come as a shock. I mean. He was conceived. In Brunello’s booth. At Pitti Uomo. My meal ticket. My only son. The truth. The future. My legacy. Steezus Christ. My only son.

That is nice. Do you hope he will be as into tailoring as you are and continues with your tailor into his adulthood? Also, do you think even though he is young he is aware of your interest in suits and such?

My daughter is constantly complimenting my clothes. I don't think she has any idea if they are any good or what constitutes good. I think she is just trying to be nice. But it's cute.

She also likes to go through my swatch collection and recommend her favorites.

My son, being only 17, is still not at the point where he has anything more than a passing interest bespoke clothing (or other higher end menswear). But there have been rumblings. For Christmas this year, he's asked for a pair of good Chelsea boots; so a pair of R.M. Williams (his first venture into welted footwear) will be under the tree for him.

Perhaps when he's graduated college I'll consider honoring the occasion with a bespoke suit.

It's hard to say what the world will be like in a decade or two.

Also, until about about two years ago, it would be typical during the course of any given week for him to wear one or two things that I wore at his age over forty years before him.

One of my aunts is a fantastic knitter, sewer, embroiderer... Would love to have her knit my future children some jumpers...Like others here, I'd probably wait till my future son/daughter were old enough that they would really appreciate bespoke tailoring...

different points - I've taken some of my kids favorite clothes and had them copies in multiple fabrics in asia.

I have promised my son that before his bar mitzva we will spend a week together in bangkok, get him a suit made, and spend the week learning thai boxing. a 13 (as he will then be) boy doesn't need a bespoke suit, but I thought that it would be a fun experience for him
