Tuxedo Vest

Hi, first post here, but I've been reading for a few months.

I'm getting married in January, and I've bought a tuxedo...

Black, Single button
Peaked Lapel
Grosgrain facings, button-covering, pant strip, etc.
Black grosgrain self tie bowtie
Marcella soft turndown collar with french cuffs
5-button vest

I went through MySuit Made to Measure, and I'm pleased with the experience and workmanship.

The only problem is that they only offer the 5 or 6 button vest, and I'd really like to look at the option of buying a low-cut 3-button u-shaped vest. Does anyone know a good tailor in NYC that would be able to match the fabric on what I already have to create this?

I like the look of the vest in this article...it's about 5 pictures down.

Also, suspenders or no suspenders?

If they won't make you a proper vest, will they simply give you the fabric, buttons, etc. that they would use to make the 5-button variety and then let you take that somewhere else to have the vest made? I think that the problem in the matching is the sourcing of the fabric. If you source the fabric from the people that made the tux, the problem then is only one of finding a tailor to make up the vest you want.

You will need the same exact fabric or it won't work. You could also try having the waistcoat recut. It might be possible to turn it into a low-cut waistcoat without lapels by cutting the front to right above the third button. The buttons will, however, be spaced farther apart than on a proper waistcoat. If the buttons are really widely spaced it might be better to cut it to above the second button from the bottom and add another buttonhole in between the two. The waistcoat might also be too long. A proper waistcoat should be fairly short and needs to be worn with trousers that sit at the waist. If all else fails, you may just need to discard the waistcoat you have and wear a cummerbund. No waistcoat would even be better than wearing a 5-button one. And braces (suspenders) are necessary if you are going to wear a waistcoat. But they are useful no matter your waist covering.

You could also try a vest in a black (preferably not too-shiny) satin. I like a same-color, yet contrasting vest with a tux. Just avoid the confetti/ tutti-frutti vests. ETA: Something along these lines: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/3060465?origin=category

I did something like this as well. Brooks sells a backless black vest that is silk, so that it doesn't look like a botched attempt at matching the wool of the tuxedo.

Why don't you just call Timothy Everest and bespeak one? He made the one in the picture you are referring to.

I've got two with a U front that I picked up from a vintage store for £10 each.
If you have a look on ebay under the military dress clothing, there are often those sort of waistcoats being sold off as separates. (That's where my two were originally sourced from, bespoke mess dress)
