Anyway, just got back from Wine Discount Center. Note to any Chicagoans--- if you find yourself near a WDC location, make sure to stop by. Good prices, pretty nice selection, great staff. Picked up a half bottle of Gaston Chiquet, a 2006 Burgress Napa Cab, and a 2006 Marsannay from Regis Bouvier all for $70.

See, this is what happens when I talk about things that aren't wine. Anyway, drinking my bottle of Gaston Chiquet Tradition Brut nv while I get ready to go out for dinner with some friends. My first time having Chiquet. This is a great "basic" grower champagne. Sophisticated, but not overwhelming. Very balanced. Nice fruit flavors, with great acidic bite coming through as well. I'd have liked a bit more minerality. The finish is long and satisfying. Silky smooth but still incredibly crisp and clean. Definitely worth what I paid. Has me interested in trying other Chiquet offerings.

Carpano is usually a mail-order item unless you are in a super-major city. Few want to buy a 1L of vermouth. Strangely enough, my local is carrying it as a trial (made an ok substitute when they stopped, capriciously, selling Vya).

Walter Hansel - Russian River
Chasseur (Bill Hunter) - Sonoma Coast
Both are excellent and outperform many that are much pricer.

^Yep, the Hansel especially is great. Speaking of great QPR RRV wines, the 2006 Small Vines Pinot is great at around $50. Really interesting story behind their winemaker too. God I love Russian River Valley for pinots.

Drove back from Arkansas today, wanted some low impact dinner. Make-your-own-pizza's (with store-bought crust).
Opened a 2007 Trivento Golden Reserve Malbec (Argentina; $17.87). Leather and fruit. Very light on the tannins. Quite quaffable. Good QPR. Not complex. Kinda one faceted, but the one facet is quite good. For when you don't want the wine to be "it."
