The style bad read of the week (here in Britain at least) is consistently the Alexis Petridis column in The Guardian on Saturday. A nadir was reached this week, with the revelation that what you might have thought of simply as the pairing of some trousers with a sports coat is in fact some "outside-the-box thinking regarding the lounge suit", and which Alex dismisses as "wacky".

As ever, in the accompanying photograph, he was dressed by a blind stylist.

Never read the Guardian for its columnists. They're all barking mad in one way or another.

I have never even heard or read this putz before, but
He has a file box of prewritten lines and out of context ideas.
he just waits to insert them in some unrelated article.

damn that Madness line was clever. does anyone have an actual visual of this so called fashion abomination.

I think he used to prance around his room naked to "one step Beyond"

To give Petridis his due, he's a great music journalist, which is his "day" job for the Guardian. I've been a daily reader of the Guardian for years, but one of its weaknesses is they're forever filling their pages with the thoughts of their G2 writers on subjects in which they have no expertise and little to nothing to contribute. I gave up on Petridis' "fashion" column after the second one. It's a space filler, nothing more. But I've got lots of time for his music writing.

^I listen occasionaly his Music Weekly Guardian podcast, which is not that bad. But I never understood how he's also getting paid for style advice. The Guardian is really a fine source for news, but not about fashion/style though.

i agree hes useless but before him it was charlie porter, now of gq, who used to write memorably awful drivel like this:

'Elliott also wants clarification over my desire for chaos in clothing one week, minimalism the next. The two seem to go hand in hand for me: minimalism should never be bland, but should have some turmoil seething beneath its surface, ie Jil Sander, or her successor Raf Simons. Chaos is just that side revealed. The main point is that nothing being worn now should be referential, historical, or backdated. Newness is all.'

I don't remember Charlie Porter, but if that quote is at all indicative of his writing, I didn't miss anything!!

I look forward to my weekly laugh at his style column.

To give the Guardian their due last week they declared the 'boot tuck' dead. If you've ever seen this abomination on the kids you'll know this is a good thing.

I agree it's not great writing, but perhaps y'all are missing the point.

He's deliberately dressing like a fool to point out foolish ways of dressing.

In this case, matching clashing patterns in coat and pants are his target.

As the Guardian helpfully explains on the site, the column "more often than not, involves him dressing up like a ninny."

But the way he talks about 'breaking' a suit implies that he is completely unaware of the existance of sport-coats.

I think not.

What he's objecting to is mixing and matching patterned or striped suit coats and pants.

I think this is something anyone in MC would object to as well.
