I found out about this site after I had some shirts tailored that I weren't pleased with. There's a lot of tailoring advice on this site, but I haven't been able to find photos of good/proper tailored dress shirts with a focus on the seams? Could someone please provide some photos of dress shirts that are properly taken in at the sleeves and torso? What should I say to a tailor to get a dress shirt to be properly altered so that the seams look like they were initially? The tailor I went to was Sonia's Alterations Shop in Montebello, CA. Besides Eddie's Tailor Shop, does any have any recommendations in or around Monterey Park, CA 91754.

Here are some photos of a dress done by said tailor:

Jeez, that's a sloppy job.

Look elsewhere. Seriously.

The seams should look the same as they did before it was taken in...

You shouldn't need to say anything, anyone competent will know what to do. Evidently "Sonia's Alterations Shop" are not competent, and you should avoid going to them again.

If a tailor should not just fold the material inward and sew it up, how would a shirt be properly taken whether it's at the sleeve or torso? I'd like to learn what to look for in the future when I check out a tailor's work of what they have waiting for customer pickup. I read a post about cutting out the seams and sewing it up before I became a member. Is that the only way?

The seam should be opened, the fabric cut to the new size, then the new seam should be flat-felled.

As I already said, this is the same type of seam it will have come with to begin with. Just look at any new shirt...the seams should look the same after alteration as they do before...

I hope it wasn't a dear shirt to you, however it looks like a good tailor can probably fix it since he didn't actually cut anything...

was this a non-iron shirt?

if yes? they are difficult to work on. the fabric is very slick and difficult to get clean seams.

the shirt may have been chain stitiched which a tailor cannot do, since it is doubtful they own a chain stitch machine
whoops.. I only looked at phot one. that is awful

Good guess, indeed it is a non-iron shirt. I might have to give moderntailor.com a try once they put the trial shirt deal back on.

What's the price range for this alteration? Also, should I just give up on small business tailors and just go to a Men's Wearhouse? MW tailors should have knowledge of flat-felled seams right?
