Are bigger and thicker buttons better?

The one on the left is a brooks brothers shirt, the one on the right is a $8 department store shirt. I was thinking of swapping the buttons for the shirts, is that a good idea?

It doesn't really matter. Personal preference IMO. My RLPL shirts tend to have fatter buttons than my other shirts, but like your department store shirt, lesser quality shirts also can have fat buttons.

Is this like putting $3K 21" rims on a ************* that's worth $1K?

Not quite. It's like putting 21" rims made of aluminum foil on an acura.

Personally I don't like thick buttons.

I find the thicker buttons get screwed up by the laundering process (mine gets sent out as we have no W/D). Especially if they are MOP...

I'm 99% sure that both are. I wouldn't do it.

Thick buttons on my shirts (Robert Graham) tend to wear out the buttonholes. I prefer thinner buttons on shirts.

My tailor was against the thicker MOP buttons for exactly the same reason.

I prefer thicker buttons. I find them easier to handle, especially to do the buttons on the forearm and cuff.
