i went to Adriano Carbone a while ago. i wouldn't come back, and i don't wear the suit he made anymore. the cutting wasn't just old-fashioned (low gorge on the lapels), it was poor - armholes were bigger than off-the-rack, jacket was too long, pants were too big in the waist. i started the thread below to rant a bit about it. http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=156494 i actually went back to him after a month or two to discuss. in his defense, he was kind enough to make adjustments - but even after 2-3 subsequent visits, with an adjustment in each, the suit remains unwearable. in contrast, the next tailor i spoke to pulled out a great bespoke the first time (pants just needed to be taken in at the waist a month later). it cost twice as much, but it's doing a lot more than collecting dust in my closet.

what about Raja Fashions? They makes visits to Australia and you can get an appointment in for a suit. It got a plug on an issue of GQ australia.

I have 1 raja suit and about 5 shirts, I would advise against them.

Prices ok I guess, mine was about $650 and is an entry level. The fit is pretty good but all fused and the finishing is very poor really. They try and play on the stupid extras like working button holes on sleeve etc, but they looked pretty bad on mine and only 2 out of 4 work. The trousers do fit me pretty well.

Even thought the fit was good ( I say was because I haven't worn it for about 6 months after putting on some weight), it is oone of m most uncomfortable suits, though I can't but my foot on why.

The trousers are a highlight and fit very well, with nice side adjusters. Shirts are ok but at $100 each cottonwork blows them out of the park.

In conclusion, you get what you pay for, something better than the oxford/country road at the same price but it is 100% not bespoke and they are very pushy especially when you want alterations done on their next visit.

Thanks for the heads up, (just read your thread). Out of interest, what was the initial consultation like? Did you go in with an idea of what you wanted or just with an open mind? I have a very specific idea od what I want (including pictures to illustrate what I have in mind). How much of your suit was influenced by Adriano and his house style? In fact what is his house style (anyone)?

Anyone been to Donatello's on Russell street in melb? I went there few months ago to get sleeves shortenend and pants taken in a bit. Seem like a good guy. Want to know if anyone tried him before with more complicated alterations or got anything made by him.

Hey All,

I'm looking for a pair of Brunswick or Burton Paul Smith shoes in Melb. Can someone help with where I can find a pair? I remember Aquila used to stock them but only sneakers but this has since stopped.

Appreciate your help.

Not necessarily but you might be better off with off the rack. A colleague of mine tried Raja in London and advised everyone against them. Poor cloth, ordinary cut: just not a particularly good product in his view (I saw the suit and agreed: he'd have done better and paid less with marks and sparks and a few quid on alterations, IMHO).

+1. A lot of these travelling tailors are cheap, and there's a very good reason why that is so. Most of their suits are boxy and unattractive and, as Oleg notes, people are generally better off finding a good OTR cut that suits them and then having a few alterations made.
