Guerlain Aa Anisia Bella for a overcast day at the office. Really should have worn something else; this is a summer scent.

I've been using Gaultier Le Male for quite a while as my "evening" scent; it's time for a change.

Any recommendations from the cognoscenti here? Something similar to Le Male, something warm, rounded, slightly sweet?

Ok, so this has now replaced Alexander McQueen's kingdom as the scent that most makes me smell like an unwashed ****. Believe it or not I actually had a few people tell me it smelled nice. Today - Dipstick - L'Ambre Dans L'Eau - nothing special.

Don't want to create a new thread... I understand it is very difficult to talk about fragrances on the net since everyone has difference olfactory systems and our own body chemistries are different. But, here goes.

I've been using John Varvatos for a while now but have recently gotten very bored with it, perhaps because it's the only scent I own. The silage and the staying power are also rather poor. I am looking to buy a new fragrance. Something that is subtle but distinct. I have been attracted to Grey Vetiver for these very reasons, and especially since I've never smelled anything like it on anyone.

Would Grey Vetiver be suitable for winter? The last time I tried it was when the weather was much warmer and I loved it.

I've also heard great things about Tobacco Vanille, never tried it, but $260 for 50ml is more than I can afford.

And finally, I know I'm being difficult, but based on the few things I've mentioned, would anyone be able to recommend a fragrance for me if you don't think GV is for me?

If you like the GV why not buy it and be happy? Not trying to be snide but its rare for me to ever smell something and be smitten with it. If I did I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. Don't buy it retail though. Search the web for deals on TF stuff.

As for Tobacco Vanille I recommend getting in on, or starting, a bottle split. You should be able to find a decant or a split bottle for much less than that price.

I was never much for GV myself, nor am I much for subtlety, so this might be outside my realm, but I'd recommend AdP Colonia Intensa and maybe Aramis JHL or Havana (slightly stronger).

Thanks for the help Rambo. Perhaps it's because I'm just getting into fragrances that I like GV so much. Thanks for the other recommendations also. I will try them out. I really can't wear intense fragrances because of my work in classical music. People go nuts if something smels strong around them when they're playing. Of course, I could wear different thing when I'm not working, but the sensitive nose thing has rubbed off on me a bit! Cheers.

Man, that sensitive-nose thing will be troublesome. Whatever you pick, someone will find a reason to sneeze. I was about to rec Guerlain Vetiver but that's hardly winter-friendly. How about Hermes Rocabar, or perhaps Caron Nuit de Noel? TF Amber Absolute is a fave for me, but it's strong as hell.

Actually...there are a few fougeres that ought to work: YSL Rive Gauche might tickle your fancy, Aramis Tuscany or perhaps Azzaro For Men: old school aromatic fougeres.

Or go a bit lighter: Puig Agua Lavanda, or maybe Tabac Original EdC.

I don't think its because you're new to fragrances that you like the GV. Its probably something that just appeals to you. I just didn't think it was anything special myself. That sensitivity thing might be tricky. You might do well with something like a Dior Homme or Prada Amber. Both are fairly soft yet subtly masculine.

This might make everyone in the orchestra faint.
