I agree with harvey, it's just too hard to make any generalities when it comes to knife laws. Unlike firearms, where some states have pre-emption laws (e.g. Pennsylvania), I'm not aware of any such thing when it comes to knives. The best advice is to check out the laws in your local area (or intended destination) and act accordingly.

Thanks, guys. I'm using the new Canon S95 that we just bought. Super small and lightweight, pretty damn fast lens for a point and shoot. That was just a lucky picture although this new camera really helps.

eglbc, what camera(s) are you using?

Man, odd muscles are sore today. Front of hip, right where the femur fits into the pelvis. I figure that's from all the big up and down steps. Traps, which I figure is from using the trekking poles.

Still, can't wait to get out again.

I couldnt be more happy with it. Super crispy leica glass. Plenty of presets, lots of manual options. Waterproof, shockproof.

eglbc, what camera(s) are you using?

I went and took a look at the Canon G12 tonight. It's a pretty impressive little camera. I have a Nikon DSLR but I'd like something smaller and lighter for backpacking. That thing gets heavy as hell after a few steep miles.

Im impressed you can hike/backpack with a DSLR. Packed my SLR on my zion trip and regretted it. Such a hassle and the space/weight wasnt worth it. The pocket point and shoot was at the ready at all times.

Yea, I can handle the weight without issue, but the space and hassle can really be a pain. The Lumix is looking very nice, but still my pack doesnt have hipbelt pockets like my friends Gregory Baltoro, so I'm still going to have to keep it in the top pocket of my pack which is still a pain, but not as annoying as carrying the SLR I suppose.

^^ Might want to try buying one of those little pouches that attach to your shoulder strap. My main packs have the hipbelt pockets and they are perfect for your digicam but the shoulder pouches are a nice alternative. Great for carrying a GPS as well.

I am starting to pick up a cold weather/snow gear outfit. Picked up a Mountain Hardware Power Stretch lightweight zip-t shirt as a base layer. and a pair of Rawik Deluxe Cargo Pants. From REI on clearance. The clearance section has an additional 30% off the most expensive item on your order thing going on until Monday. Might be a good way to stock up on stuff.

I went and looked at a Clik Elite Cloudscape pack at REI yesterday. I just bought a daypack, but it's not designed for camera stuff at all, so I'll probably end up picking this up at some point too. Probably for my Japan trip. Good amount of interior space, room for my hydration bladder, decent camera protection, good straps variety of anchor points and equipment positions. Seems pretty good overall.

Hey Slim have you ever checked out the "garage sale" at REI? (it might have another name, but it is along those lines). It is all the returned items and other left over crap. They have it about once a month and the deals are amazing. They had a lot of good backpacks and sleeping gear when I was in there last.
Worth a look.
BTW the REI in Seattle is next level. They have a damn kayak test run if memory serves.
