I put a lot of weight on my toes when I walk. I also walk very fast. As a result, I'm starting wear down the front of the soles on my Bedford's. (See above) I wear sneakers and Dainite soled shoes a lot, so I've never taken the time to address the issue on my leather soled shoes. I plan on re-dressing the edges. Is there still time to put metal toe guards on these shoes? (Like the ones pictured below) Or would I have to get them re-soled first? Any recommendations on re-soling and toe tap installation? B. Nelson any good?

Also, how noisy are metal toe guards? Do rubber toe taps exist?

It is never too late. I had a pair similar to yours and B. Nelson (VIP) was able to add leather and install the flush mounted toe taps. Don't worry about noise as there won't be any. If you do metal heel taps then it will be noisy as all hell.

Any shoe repair shop should be able to put plastic toe taps on for $5 or so. If B. Nelson is nearby, sure, go for the flush metal taps, but there is really no need to mail your shoes across the country for toe taps.

Metal toe taps feel a little weird at first but you'll adjust pretty quickly.

No metal ones though, and I'm finding that the plastic ones last me only a few months (also a fast, hard walker). Let me know if you find somewhere to do the metal taps, as I just bought a pair of C&J Lowndes that I'd like to get done.

Yes, they scratch hardwood floors. The recessed ones will probably be much less damaging than the nailed on taps, but they can still scratch. I noticed dress shoes with the nails in the stacked leather heel can scratch the floor even without taps, but it can probably be buffed out more easily than with taps.

The gentlemen at Sky Valet in Georgetown run www.shoerepairmen.com, a SF sponsor, and can help you out with flush metal taps. They've done a number of my shoes and I'm really happy with their work. There's another thread that shows their work.

Thanks for that. I've been to their store but hadn't noted their recrafting services.
