I saw from http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=203356
that many people think watches don't serve a functional purpose in today's world, and to pay large amounts of money for one has no purpose other than to make one feel better about himself.
I can guarantee that the people who say this, say this only because they probably can't afford a nice watch and are in denial.
For those who say that the time on your watch and the time on your cellphone are the same:
The time on your watch is not the same as the time on your phone. Your phone tells you the time quantitatively, that is, your phone will tell you that it is 9:50pm
Your watch tells you the time VISUALLY, as opposed to QUANTITATIVELY, that is, you take a glance at your watch and your minute hand tells you how much physical distance you have until its 10pm, relative to the distance between the minute hand and the 12 marker on your face.
It's a whole different way of thinking. Instead of thinking, "I have 10 minutes and 42 seconds until its 10", what your mind perceives is 'I have this much distance before my minute hand hits 12". Something as cold as a number is never involved in the thought process.
For those who say the cellphone takes the place of a watch:
The rudest thing you can do is check the time on your phone in the presence of others. It shows you have no respect for the other person's time, it tells the other person you want to leave, and ultimately shows that you have no class. The slight turn of a wrist and a quick glance of the eye can conceal this.
For those who say spending a large amount for a watch is absurd:
The only people who readily accept fact without checking in, are the insane and the stupid. Before a person accepts the time on their watch to be true, they wait to see that the second hand moves, if they do not, they can't actually confirm the time is correct because they don't know if their watch is still functioning.
This is the reason you pay to have sweeping automatic movement. This means that you do not have to wait one second every time you look at your watch to know that it is not broken, (that is for the tick of the second hand to occur). In a watch with sweeping movement, it never stops moving and because of this, your notion and relationship to time, never stops.
