Longshot...

Anyone been to Southern Chile (except Torres del Paine, which I've seen)? Looking to get my backcountry on with a trip to the Lakes District... I dont even know where to begin looking, unfortunately. I'm in Santiago right now, but the informational resources are limited at best.

Are you looking for a multi-day redwood hike or a place where you can take a nice hours long stroll and then camp?
The thing about Redwoods is that they are almost all privately owned by logging companies and have been logged over several times.

Ideally the former, a mix of trail, random camp,trail,random camp, then head back. I didn't know that about our redwoods but I come across info about old logging sites being made into parks.

Arggh!
Cant find hiking shoes my size here.
I'm 30cm, and I found my size but the SA suggested I get 31cm (which they dont make) allowing for socks and my feet swelling while hiking.

i may have my geography mixed up, but isn't the lakes district furhter north? 10 years ago we went on a fishing trip out of puerto mont/ pauerto varas. beautiful country. you should be able to get some info in santiago, esp if you speak spanish. NOLS runs a course furhter south (maybe where you'll be?) out of coyhaique(?) - they might have some info...

lakes district is southern chile-- the beginning of patagonia.

the possibilities are really just endless in this country. i'll check nols.

Here are a few of the largest Redwood parks in CA and I believe the world: http://www.nps.gov/pwr/redw/ http://humboldtredwoods.org/ It is the **** out there, Northern Humbold/Souther Del Norte but it is beautiful country.

GF cycled through that area a few weeks back. She has some amazing pictures. I am supremely jealous.

lol, just met a lady who was telling me about the lost coast up north, saying it's beautiful but right now isn't a good time to go because they're harvesting.

I would not worry too much about it. The lost coast is hiked enough that any growers in the area would not grow anywhere near the trails. And as much weed is grown out there, you're still pretty unlikely to stumble on it randomly.

Also while the Lost Coast is awesome, it is not full-on Redwoods. You would see a lot of Redwoods on the way and on parts of the trial but a lot of the trails are on the coast in the costal transitional grassland and mixed tree type flora. Still worth going though.

I bought tons a backpacking **** a little while ago when I was hiking but I've sort of gotten out of it (time constraints lately.) I have a Dana Design pack that rocks, but a few months ago I went online to look for some accessories and apparently the brand has been bought by Marmot and is more or less defunct, which sucks because they were great packs.

And just to keep this styleforum related, I was wearing my Herman's Survivor hiking boots. These boots are awesome and have lasted me at least ten years. These are from before they sold out to Wal-Mart, these are the real deal leather boots. They have broken in wonderfully.

^^ Did you see any raptors up there? It's been a while since I've been up there but I remember seeing lots of golden eagles wafting through the currents at the Pinnacle.
