I don't get the "why are you so dressed up" thing...but I do get the "nice: tie/suit/shirt/etc." and/or the "you look nice" thing.
Some people at my company go to see clients during the summer in just slacks and a shirt! I really don't get that. I wear a suit/tie EVERY time. It was hat as hell in nYc this summer and I had to tough it out!
I truly believe that it makes you stand out for the better or worse!

I don't get it during business hours, but on weekends and off time I am often asked that question. I sometimes respond with "it's x-day", with "x" being whatever day of the week it happens to be.

Living in a beach resort community where most people dress in a slovenly manner, I get similar questions occasionally.
More often, I get respectful treatment from local merchants and tradesmen, and admiring glances from women
So overall it doesn't bother me

I get similar comments on almost a daily basis. I suspect a large part of that is my age (28) and my locale (Southern California.) Many 20-somethings in California seem to avoid "dressing up" if it's not required of them.

I get it sometimes. People don't understand. On the other hand, my friends got used to me dressing up and now call me for advice and ask me to go shopping with them. I take it as a compliment.

I've seen this too, white people seem to resent the higher status that a suit supposedly implies. I made the mistake once of going to a walmart after work one day in a suit; i could hear people muttering almost the whole time. It's hard to know how to respond to the rather patronizing tone of the question, maybe you can just say 'i was at work', lol.

Normally don't go to class in a suit but it was International Suit Up Day and it was a fun class event. Lady professor said "wow, you clean up nice." Responded with "yeah, cause most days, I'm just fugly."

+1 I was walking around near Dupont Cr. in Washington DC, and some black guys randomly complimented my shoes. Word!

A girl at a lounge winked at me and said "love the suit".

And I winked back and said, "It's a sport coat and trousers."

I went home alone that night.

I generally wear dress pants and shirt, to work. I threw a sport coat on the other morning and got a lot of questions.
