New Iron Ranger Boot Pre-Treatment

After researching for a few weeks, since I am a college student and jeans and a shirt are typical for me, I decided a casual dress boot would be the best footwear for me. I saw and loved Red Wing's Iron Ranger 8111:

.

I just ordered a pair and it will get here in a week or two. In the mean time, I want to know if anyone has any tips for pre-treatment to help with the longevity of the shoe. Like I said, I am a college student and my campus is very large so I am doing a lot of walking every day. Also, it rains somewhat frequently and the sidewalks here don't have the best drainage, so I suppose water damage would be of concern.

I searched and found that many had success with Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP so I ordered an 8 oz. supply. Is there anything else or any other information that would be useful? Does anyone know if these shoes are comfortable to walk long distances in or should I get some sort of additional insert to make it more comfortable?

Thanks! I really enjoy reading and browsing this forum.

I don't believe it's limited to just Red Wing boots. If someone does, eventually, post any useful treatment tips then who is to say it is limited to just Red Wing boots. I chose to say those are the pair of boots I purchased just to give an example.
