I've been trying to find smoking statistics that are actually informative.

For example:

Probability of getting lung cancer due to smoking at some point in my life if I started smoking at age x, smoked y amount a day, and quit smoking at age z.

^ all of those variables should be customizable.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

A lot of stuff I've read about smoking cigs basically says unless you're a pack a day person it is generally not too bad for you. Some people argue a cigarette or two a week is good for you... I'm not sure. I guess its just like anything moderation is the key.

What do you want these stats for??

Mainly to know when/if I should quit, at the current rate of consumption(7 cigs a week or so).

It depends on the genetic mutations of the lungs that already exist. Recent studies show that lung cancer usually develops around 300,000 mutations. You can't really estimate the probability without knowing the current state of mutations. Some people already have a low mutation count, so they have a higher chance of dying from something else before developing lung cancer. Others already have a pre-existing higher mutation count and are the people who develop cancer earlier or from second-hand smoke.

have you looked into any lung regeneration studies? Your lungs recover pretty quickly and even if you smoke 7 cigs a week after about a month or so after you quit your lungs are pretty much back to new. (from what i've read. I'll try to find the articles. it was a long time ago when i read it)

That's only for the physical state of the entire lungs. The DNA damage cannot regenerate and is what causes cancer. The physical recovery of the lungs would only lessen the chance of other illness like COPD. Here is an article that explains the genetic mutations: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0701145529.htm

Lung cancer is a myth, like global warming and medicine and the rainforest.

Why would anyone need statistics to tell you smoking is bad? All of this stuff is correlational anyway. The fact of the matter is you are smoking a ******* cigarette and ingesting horrible toxins into your body. Doesn't matter how many cigarets a day it takes to lower your life span statistically by 5 years, the fact is each one is bad for you and NO amount is healthy. The concept of a few a month being healthy is preposterous.

Important smoking statistic:

60% of all women thus far willing to have consensual sexual relations with me were regular smokers.

It makes you look cool, and that's all that matters.

I just tried to looking for a link to a study I recently read and couldn't find it. It was basically my whole motivation for quitting. Like you, I was averaging one a day.

The premise was this: the damage to your lungs is done by those first 1-3 cigs a day. The rest of the cigs you smoke obviously don't help, but they're just gravy.

BTW, not to be a shill, but I started taking the Nicorette mini lozenges. They're expensive as **** and more addictive than cigarettes (think Tic-tac that gives you a buzz.) But they did work. It has been a month and I have had almost zero desire since day three or four.

The statistic that gets me can be found here.

5 year survival rate for lung cancer is 14%. That means if you get lung cancer you're pretty much boned. Why the hell would you want to smoke and increase the risk?

If that doesn't do it for you, see Cancer Stats

The lungs aren't the only problem with smoking...there's also all kinds of cardiovascular problems associated as well. It increases risks for blood clots, and it also increases blood pressure. I'm not a big fan of strokes, heart attacks, cancer, or COPD.....so I'd pass.
