Retail Price for Shoes....

Gents,

I found a pair of Santoni's that I really, really like. However, they are a bit pricey given the retail cost is $650. I am a fan of NEVER paying retail for anything, but I do want these shoes. I guess my question is is it ever ok to pay full retail for shoes?

If you can afford it and it's rare and something you REALLY like, sure, why not?

Agreed. Is this going to hurt your finances for weeks/months to come? If not, and you really like them.. go for it. There's a couple shoes I really would like to own (See signature) but I'll never pay over $1,000 retail for it because its not within reason for my budget

Almost all my shoes were purchased on sale; however, that is not always possible - I have paid retail because they were not on sale or wanted the shoes before the sale period. The same applies to clothes, etc, sometimes you have to pay full retail.

If you can wait for sale period and they would be available after the sale period just incase they are not on sale, then wait. If not or you want the shoes now; and they are affordable, buy them.

If it is a department store you may be able to order the shoe online and save on tax. In California that saves you about 10%, which is sort of a sale in itself.

There are a whole lot of people in the world that pay retail for everything. Buying something here and there at full cost is not going to kill you.

See...that's the other thing. I really like the shoe, but two things come to mind: 1) is there a better quality shoe for cheaper? 2) is there a better quality shoe for the same price? Shopthefinest carries Santonis. I picked up a similar pair but FAMs from Ian for ~$400.

CheF, you missed the Santoni sale by a few weeks. Other than ebay, I think you just might have to wait it out. Occasionally Nordy's does have sales, and you just may find these same shoes on a rack in the shoe dept there.

Waiting for sales only works if you want something that no one else wants, overstock, odd shoe size, or damaged goods. If it's popular and hard-to-find, probably not much chance you will catch it on sale.

The common response is AE for this site.

Definitely can find AEs for less than $600. Seconds are even cheaper and they have outlet stores. Do a search for Allen-Edmonds.

Thanks for the info. The thing about AE shoes is that none of them really strike me as all that appealing. I know that they are very popular on SF, but they just don't do it for me. I'm going to go shoe shopping this weekend, so maybe I'll give them another chance.

For these reasons, I rarely buy shoes on sale.
