I might try to skip out of work early and swing by tonight to check it out. Overall it looks fantastic and will no doubt blow my grocery budget every so often.

Eataly is still a bustling building site but on the 5,000 square metres at street level you can make out the fish store, the fresh pasta department, made by hand as the customer watches, the chocolate section complete with waterfall, and the cake and pastry shop, with Luca Montorsino in charge. Everywhere there are shelves of top-quality products and placards explaining how Piedmontese cattle are bred in Montana, or the importance of bronze wire-drawing for pasta.

I'm curious about their wine store too, hopefully it's fare more comprehensive and price friendly than IWM.

Is anybody else planning on check it out sometime?

My mother gave me the NYT clip about this. She is very excited for me to go down there and wants to go herself when she comes this fall.

Well, if nothing else it will provide an easy target for a terrorist to kill most of the foodies in NYC in one fell swoop.

I pass this spot every day with my mouth watering anticipating the opening. Can't. freaking. wait.

And telling from my facebook homepage updates, the foodies are already getting their panties wet for this "Eataly" thing.

I wonder if it's the Barilla they stell in Italy (it is pretty predominant there) or if it's the American made stuff. Either way I'm sure there will be plenty of others to choose from.

Is this the place with the vegetable butcher? If so, . Italian food really ought not be so freaking precious.

I went to the one in Torino in May. It was an interesting store, a lot of the food aisles had a warehouse type of vibe...it was cool they had small mini-restaurants within. The butcher shop there was amazing, with different proscuito and serrano hams (I bought some Belotta). Fish was awesome, as was the basement wine bar...ate at the little wine/beer bar area at the counter, it was ok. I was screwing around with Imovie with stuff I shot in the store with my digital cam:

I occasionaly frequent the 3-level place in Bologna. Ate there once, which was pretty good. Have great selection of well-sourced produce, trying to maintain the SlowFood ethos. So, not only Italian. The 500g bags of pasta here isn't Barilla, and it's not in that brand's price range. IIRC come in around 3 euros.
Also, a good enoteca.
