Steel shank not effect stiffness.

Better to buy two Church's than one E.G in your case me think.

I suspect heel slippage may come from how the leather is shaped around the back of the shoe...It depends on the extent of slippage and what you're willing to live with. I find it irritating with my EGs because it initially caused some irritation (blistering) to the back of my heels, which I didn't encounter with my C&Js or Churchs... On a side note, I also found the the front portion toe box on my EGs on the 202 last to be cut without enough height leading to cramping and discomfort to the top of my big toes, which was also irritating. If heel slippage is minor then I suppose it's really up to you to make a judgement as to whether you can live with it.

Heel slippage is probalby because the last isn't ideal for you, which will be worse if the shoe is stiff, like if it has a double sole.

I think Church's shoes are generally about the same as C&J Benchgrade, but Church's are way overpriced outside of England. Also, Church's has a a few different quality lines if I recall correctly, and some of their shoes use corrected grain (cheapo) leather, which they call bookbinder.

Even in the UK, a pair of Church's costs about 60 dollars more than an a roughly equivalent pair of C&J's. That's not worth paying, if you ask me.

Church's traditional models like the Diplomat and Chetwyn are solidly made, good shoes at least on a level with C&J benchgrade. The Royal Collection was very good, though pricier and inexplicably terminated, at least if the website is anything to go by. You're safe with these models but remember that every season Church's produces a range of fashion shoes in unlovely leathers and, ah, "continental" lasts which I don't imagine anyone wanting to keep for the twenty odd years traditional Church's should survive.

C&J handgrade is very good in my experience.

That's actually the case with me, too.

The EG 202 last is remarkably roomy, with a high instep.
Unfortunately, I can't wear C&Js with an E fitting as the "v" of the laces is incredibly far apart, so I have to go for a G fitting for extra room. Slip on a pair of captoe balmorals on the 202 last, however, and they fit me like a pair of gloves.

Cleverley bespoke > EG ... and worth every penny ... in my opinion. It's all relative.

Churches, C&J, EG, Cleverley ... they are all respectable. Moreover it's certainly possible for a man can be considered well-dressed in any of them. It's also possible he won't be considered well-dressed ... but it won't be the fault of the shoemaker.
