Allen Edmonds declined to refurbish these a third time, so I had my local cobbler change it up a bit. I hadn't worn these in over a year when I decided to give it a go.

I stole the idea from Leather Soul's Red Soul Longwing from this past spring and they turned out better than I thought and very comfortable.

Forgot to ask . . . what would you wear these with? Jeans, khakis, plain front flannels?

My God man...what have you done to those Ashtons?
Only a crab fisherman would warm to these now.

Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder I suppose.

Even the 'inspiration shoes' you posted, say 'fishing trawler' ot 'toxic waste removal' to me.
I can't imagine anywhere else they could be worn.
I had to go visit my own Ashtons just to recover.
Exactly where would you wear yours in their current condition?

They look sweet IMO. Wear them with whatever you want. The key is that you did something original (or semi-original, based on inspiration from Leather Soul), and I think the finished product looks fun. I'd definitely do these with cuffed wool trousers and a sport coat for an off-the-beaten path look.

Bull - that's the spirit that was intended. These were destined for the trash until I decided to repurpose them. Saved me the trouble.

MoL - hope you and your Ashtons survived. I intend to wear them with jeans or as suggested by Bull. For what it's worth, the photo I attached over emphasizes the dark welt and color with shadows. They are really less dramatic than the photo represents.

Maybe a daytime shot might win me over.
I tried lightening the photo with PhotoShop over here but, as you say, that black welt is fighting the new sole...hard to see how they really look but I'll take your word for it.
Perhaps I haven't grown tired of my own Ashtons yet to appreciate where you are with yours now.
Your tops look in very good condition. My own are almost due for a resole.

Resoul - what a clever coinage of a new word. The process of giving a pair of old shoes a new life (i.e., reincarnation) is indeed a re-soul.

Not to get too metaphysical, but do you really see the soul of a shoe embodied in its sole? Surely the last, or maybe the patina, is closer to the mark....

I sent in three pairs and they returned the Ashtons with a nice note saying they didn't think they could recraft them up to AE standards and included a $50 coupon towards the purchase of a new pair. They had already been recrafted twice and the uppers were pretty beat up - I was pretty surprised that my local cobbler made them look as good as he did. I also think AE was inundated with recrafting orders after the special they ran. They did a great job on the other two pairs, just as my experience has always been with AE.
