Rain boots?

I'm picking up a pair or two of rain boots for college and I'm looking for some advice in this department. Is there really a point in getting nice rainboots? I mean my clothes are generally nice but these boats are designed to be abused in bad weather - I don't need to obnoxiously show off the Burberry check. Would I be fine going with something from a place like Target or w/e?

I'm just looking to pick up the classic rubber kind that almost goes up to the knee.

Also colorwise, obviously black is an option but how about yellow? No one bothers trying to match/complement with their rain boots right? Is yellow classic? I really don't know where to even begin in this department as I don't walk much when it rains currently.

Men shouldn't wear wellies of any kind unless they're actively cleaning out a barn or hunting for something in wetlands. It can be cute on cute girls, it looks obscenely effeminate on men. Don't get a brightly colored rainboot. It'll look like you borrowed your sister's boots. Just get black or some other dark color (dark navy, dark green, etc). J Crew has some discounted rainboots right now, I believe for around $100. These were on Etsy for a while, sold for around $75. Etsy might have other finds, but warning - they cater mainly to women, so it's hard to find men's stuff. http://www.etsy.com/listing/46182014...es%5B%5D=title Depending on how you dress, they could be appropriate for a college student. Right, I'll pass on the yellow then. Black it is. My price range is roughly 75-80sh - could spend a few more bucks but would rather get even cheaper. My shoe size is 7.5. I am considering getting a pair of 10 or 12 inch LL Bean boots - would a taller boot look awkward on a shorter guy? Spending a little extra for Made in USA + Snow boot + a classic design is definitely an option.

What makes a rain boot expensive construction wise? I simply hesitate to spend money on boots made for foul weather if a 30 dollar pair could suffice.

I've actually been thinking about getting a pair of rainboots myself, and have been wondering the same thing. The really cheap rainboots I've seen are very shiny, which I think makes the boot look bad. I look forward to hearing what other SFs have to say.

I assume part of this depends on what conditions you're wearing them in. If it's a really harsh snow, I assume cheaper rainboots would fall apart. If it's just rain, that's only occasionally heavy, I assume cheap rainboots would be fine.

Looking forward to hear what others have to say.

Cheap rain boots will not fall apart. Spend $20 at Target and be done with it. Its a plastic shoe.
