I'll second Tokyo Slim's recommendation. I've been running the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 THX system for about 1.5 years now. It's a great little system and street price is reasonable. I got a deal on an open box set for $70 (shipped) from an Amazon reseller.

Forgot about the Klipsch, probably not quite as powerful as the z-2300 but much better sound.

cowboom.com has it for $122 brand new with free shipping.

No gaming, also don't give a **** about multimedia experience (e.g. don't care about "sweet surround sound bro" for films). Just all kinds of music.

That's a really good price. Most of the street pricing I see on those Promedias are $175 and above.

The only complaint I have on the Klipsch speakers is the heat. The subwoofer runs hot! I keep it under my computer desk, away from my main tower. Between it and all the fans I have running in my Core i7 setup I could probably go the winter without turning on the heater!

Klipsch definitely is the way to go on this. I have a Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1 system. It sounds amazing.

Don't waste your time or money on Bose garbage.

The M-Audio is probably your best bet, also can easily be returned to their B&M store if they don't suit your needs.

I have these Soundsticks and I think they are great. I haven't compared them to the Klipsch speakers being recommended, though. You used to be able to demo these HK speakers at an Apple store.

I really like my promedia ultra 5.1

The sound is good and the bass is pretty tight. I actually only have the center/left/right hooked up right now. Moved into a new place and didn't have a convenient place to put the rear speakers...since I don't really game anymore and now watch movies in my living room on a tv, I didn't really see the need for the surrounds.

I am not sure how the ultra compares to the regular (there is no "ultra" in 2.1) but its a good system if you can find one. Only problem is that they stopped making them.

I really dislike the z-2300 systems...they sound like complete crap (many of my friends have jumped on $70 deals for them). The one redeeming factor is that you can replace the side speakers and its not so bad...My friend blew his out at a party and we saw a slickdeal on some surround speakers. bought 2 for $10 a piece and cut the wires off the blown out speakers. Now they actually sound pretty good.

Metro: Don't you live in a fairly small studio? Could you just get a small bookshelf/amp setup hooked up to your TV and then just run a cable over from your TV? If you just want to listen to music from the computer, this is probably the best way to go as they can do double duty.

You are just a bit short of Audioengine A2s which have stellar sound. But I think $199.

If you need a sub, the Klipsch aren't a bad route to take. Others in the price range are the Swan M10, which uses a desk midwoofer.

I'd probably go with a 2.0 route. The AV40, Swan M200, M-Audio BX5a are all good buys. The A2 and A5 I hear are beat by the competition for their pricepoints.

I just got the BX5a's. If you're patient they drop down < $210 from amazon.
