Is this serious? When I visit NYC this fall, should I be concerned?

Do I need to inspect my hotel, stores, restaurants, friend's homes

, etc. for bed bugs?

There are more "bed bugs" and other micro-organisms on the average pillow (even your own pillow) than you could count.

I think I read in a Bill Bryson book that if you weigh the average pillow, 10-20% of the weight you measure will be "bed bugs" and other wayward organics and the like.

I'm not sure it's a battle you can win. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it.

Big time bed bug infestations in that neck of the woods. Last I heard it seems like Montreal is under 10 feet of 'em.

You do know there is a parasitic insect called the Bed Bug, and it is not a term referring in general to insects that can be found in the bed, right? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedbug Bed Bug's are nasty .. and can really ruin a vacation. I was staying in a hostel in Melbourne where a bunch of guys had been feasted on. They were barely functional in the bars for a few days due to the constant itching.

I've always used the term to refer to both, I guess.

Just take your mummy bag with you and you'll be fine.

From the wikipedia page on bed bugs: "Especially desperate males sometimes mistake other males for females and fatally wound the latter in the abdomen."

This made me lol.
