Where to stay (really nice) in New Orleans?

We are planning to spend two nights in New Orleans to celebrate my 50th birthday, and we want to stay in a first class hotel. So far friends have recommended these few choices:

1. The Roosevelt (Waldor Astoria i.e. a Hilton property and I can stay free)
2. Windsor Court (close the water and great views)
3. International House (boasts of its star power, which gives me pause)

I will appreciate any comments and anecdotes on places you have stayed and liked.

Thanks in advance.

P.S.: I have reread the thread about restaurant recs from earlier this year. Making plans for dinners at Herbsaint and August.

The Roosevelt
Le Pavillon
Soniat House
Ritz
Montelone(Carousel Bar if you've never been)

Clancy's, Lilette, Boucherie, Rio Mar/La Boca, Casamento's for lunch if you're lucky enough to be there when they are open, Cochon Butcher, Central Grocery should be on your list of places to eat.

Roosevelt would be tops as free, and one of a half dozen to choose if cost were no concern.
Choose Le Pavillion or IHouse over Windsor or Ritz if paying.
Can't go wrong with cited restaurant rec's, but may I add Commanders for lunch (good value vs. dinner, neighborhood is fun to walk through before/after), Mr. B's in FQ, and I second Cochon/Cochon Butcher. Go Saints!

If at a hotel, I've always stayed at the Maison de Ville. Usually cottage four.

Thanks for the recs, guys.

Vox, I am intrigued by the Maison de Ville cottages on Dauphine. Was street or reveller noise ever an issue? The Mrs. enjoys a good time, but when it is time for sleeping she needs quiet. I have been forewarned.

Can be noisy. When I last stayed there anyway- not terrible but not church mouse quiet either. The cottages are very nice, though. I was down last month and stayed on an upper floor at the Astor that boasted quited rooms... still noisy.

I used to live in New Orleans. When my parents visited me, they stayed at the Maison de Ville. The stay lasted approximately 30 minutes when they found mouse **** all over their cottage. Just one anecdote and probably not indicative of the place, but I thought I'd share.

Since I lived there, I don't have much personal experience with staying at hotels. However, I have had a nice stay at the W in the French Quarter. I appreciated how the place mixed its modern look with the old charm of the quarter.

If I didn't have a place to stay in New Orleans -- less than four blocks away -- that would be one of my top pics.

Bed bugs and fleas? Cross Maison de Ville off my list! I've narrowed it down to a choice between the Windsor Court and the Roosevelt.

August is going to be a definite for a dinner.
