I read the urban dictionary entry went to http://www.latfh.com/ but I still don't understand what hipsters are.

I figured this is a good place to ask, I'm assuming streetwear and hipster culture overlap (my feelings conveniently explained in this venn diagram)

Not much of contribution, but for me...the first thing I think of when I hear the term 'hipster' is Urban Outiftters.

Venn diagram, haha. I got so sick of those from studying for the GMAT.

You figured wrong. "Dumb Threads" would be the appropriate place.

Me too. Turns out all you need is one item from an increasingly long list of items and brands that have become associated with hipster culture. Or you need to like musical genres outside of the mainstream (except for metal, techno, jazz, and classical, those get a free pass for some reason).

For instance: I wear skinny jeans and a plain v-neck t-shirt every day, I own an American Apparel cardigan and a few items from Urban Outfitters, and I listen to Explosions in the Sky and Yeasayer; therefore, I am a hipster.

Take a look at my FS thread. All that guy knew about me was that I was on SF, that I lived in Harlem, and that I wanted a cello. Clearly, every fashion-conscious cellist in New York is a hipster.

Hipsters are people who pretend they like kitsch, but don't really like kitsch.

I think if you're into American Apparel and indie rock, you're not so much a hipster as someone who's just into alternative culture stuff. You really gotta have that ironic appreciation for kitsch to cross the line into hipsterdom.

You really didn't need the rest, this seals it.

When I was in high school the kids that wore scarves and rode Vespas were called emos rather than hipsters.
