I never had problems with the speedhooks. For extra laces, just e-mail Alden directly and they'll send you a pair for free. I've done it twice for both my Indy's just to have back up laces.

Does anyone have a source for replacement laces? I'm having a hard time finding the right length/width waxed laces some of the specialty models use.

Buy some proper work/hiking boot laces, they're available at most grocery or drug stores. The flat waxed laces are junk.

I think the idea is to provide a link to the coupon or a hint as how to obtain it.

I'll give that a try, thanks.

I've been wearing them pretty hard (several long mountain treks through rough terrain), might be the reason why they're shredding so fast.

I prefer the flat laces look, but I'll definitely grab something more sturdy if this keeps up.

Ask for someone's coupon in the jcrew thread or buy one off ebay.

Looking at the Alden Chukka on the Barrie last.

If a 11.5 D on the Hampton Last fits me perfectly, would 11 D on Barrie be perfect?

Theoretically, yes. I find the barrie to be a true D though, if you're wide in the least bit you're going to have a problem.

To replace my Indy laces, I bought some leather laces online from a site - got a few different styles of laces to see what works best. The site was shoelacesexpress.com I got Dark Brown Square Leather Laces 72 inch, Medium Brown Square Leather Laces 72 and Medium Brown Round Leather Laces 54 inch 1 Pair Pack. the 72" laces are squared and are a softer leather and are easier to tie and hold a knot better but 72" is a bit long so you'd either have to wrap it around the back of your ankle, or just trim it down to 54" or so, but they do look truer to the flat lace look. The 54" ones are round leather and do an ok job, but are a bit dry even after treating them with mink oil. However they are holding up really well, and the speed hooks haven't cut them up yet - I'm wearing my Indies almost daily and have had the new laces in for a little over a month and haven't had any issues. I think I posted pictures earlier on in this thread when I first got them but can't remember. e: found 'em http://www.styleforum.net/showthread...25#post3339625

Going to spring for the 990 plain toe in shell in the next few months. Should I get cigar shell or #8? I am leaning towards cigar at this point.

That's just silly. Both are awesome, get the one you feel you'd appreciate the most.

I believe it's a customer appreciation, one time coupon, included in some customer's catalogs. (And I hate the speed lacing; it never seems to hold, seems too bunched, looks crappy, etc. I'm always looking for boots with standard lacing.).
