be that as it may, he was talking about black suits, not pinstripe suits. Black suits suck, and keep in mind when you consider one....you ARE NOT Bradley Cooper or Brad Pitt. Go ahead and wear one to a Hollywood premier but not to work

The topic was black suits and the office. Should be ok if your office is where you're conducting weddings or funerals.

1) All the suits he listed had patterns, hell the thread's name is about pinstripes. 2) No one cares about black suits aside from SFers 3) If you've ever seen American office workers you'd know black suits should be the least of their worries; the pooling dockers, tissue boxes for shoes and cellphone clipped on their belts are way more offensive.

This is one of the only office environments where it is really becoming a big no no; funeral conductors are now aiming for a somber, discrete look but avoiding black, well that's the tendency.

I had some laughs. But you forgot the most , huge double windsor not tighten at all with the collar button unbuttoned. All the spaniard socialist incluided ex president Felipe Gonzalez wear that way.

Add dark brown shirts on light gray jackets .

Black shirts on gray jackets and so on...

I think that part of your original question had to do with age and pinstripes. I'm the same age as you and I would feel really out of place wearing pinstripes. I think it looks great on some of the older guys I see, but if I saw a 20-something wearing pinstrips I think it would look like he was posing.

I think as younger guys we can go for more agressive silhouettes that the older guys can't--but we're more limited in patterns. Windowpane=okay, but a POW check looks really trendy on young guys while it looks just fine on an older guy.

I love pin-stripes, I don't like window pane... on myself. I guess it's an aesthetic choice. If you like it, use it.

Interesting pin stripe colours can look good but you need to have the appropriate coloured shirts, ties (and if you wear them, pocket squares) to contrast or match the pinstripe colours. If you prefer sombre colours you may want to stick to monochrome stripes on a suit.

The whole black suit thing is a bit overdone on SF, hence the previous posts. There is some groupthink but some validity in the hate. I think it's primarily because black will often discolour as soon as it gets even a little dusty or dirty or faded and begins to look cheap and old very quickly. It also contrasts sharply with both light and dark colours so there is no subtlety any time it's worn with anything but greys.

As examples.. I have one particular suit that could be anything from navy to black with blue pinstripes. I'm not sure of the colour myself, and different people seem to have different opinions. Even the tailor that did some minor alterations thought it was brown. I happily wear it for work, but wouldn't feel comfortable in it at night or casually, even as a possible black suit. On the other hand I feel the very opposite about a self stripe black suit I own, that I feel comfortable wearing only in the evening. Both striped suits, both very different.

Speaking as an Australian on behalf of our New Zealand cousins, I'm certain that was meant as a compliment.

Maybe this varies depending on location, but this is certainly not the case where I am. Pin-stripes are probably no more or less common on 20-somethings than they are on older guys.

I think black suit/black shirt is a perfectly acceptable look in Las Vegas and is far more appropriate in that setting then a Navy suit with a white shirt or anything similar. Bradley Cooper did it very well in The Hangover. Also, Michael Douglas recently played a character who went black on black often in Solitary Man. He didnt do it as well as Cooper because he was older and wore it in regular situations as opposed to a bachelor party in Vegas...but it fit his personality in the film.

OK, you are going WAY over the line here. I take great offense at anyone who uses that word "degenerate". I mean, why would you stoop so low?
None of the sheep think I'm a degenerate so why would you?

I wear a striped navy suit in my American office all the time. It works well for me. I certainly wouldn't wear a black suit to work, striped or not.

What you would wear at the Venetian has no relationship (one hopes) to what you would wear at the office, where you deal with clients and those you hope will be clients. In your professional life, stick with navy and olive, and in winter (if you're in the appropriate climate) the occasional brownish tweed. Vegas? Black is fine. Hell, bowling shirts are fine.

One more thing: don't look to movies if you're looking for sartorial guidance. Inspiration, fine, but if admiration of a look were sufficient we'd all look like Henry Hill in Goodfellas. And then we'd get the same reaction from our bosses that Henry got from his mother: "You look like a gangster." Not a horrible thing, necessarily, but not the best thing in the work context, either.

Bottom line: you want to start with navy, and go from there. Pinstripes are fine, but get yourself a basic Brooks navy suit and work your way up. The fact that you're interested in dressing well is great in itself. Start with the fundamentals, and pretty soon you'll find you have thirty or more suits in your closet and this discussion will be purely academic.
