Quest for the best wallet leather

Hello Gentlemen,

Here is my first question as a new member, concerning those who are knowledgeable in leather tanning and treatment:

I am interested in crafting a very minimalist leather card case for myself similar to those offered by Billykirk leather goods and MAKR, and would like to know what would be, in your own opinion, the best type and treatment of leather to use for such a project. Of course, I am interested to know what is truly the best leather in terms of durability and ability to form a unique and rich patina. Furthermore, if anyone knows of an exceptional tannery that can provide leather for projects like this, I'd be most grateful for the information. I look forward to hearing your advice, and welcome all opinions!

kangaroo is supposed to be very thin and strong so it makes a good thin wallet. However, I don't know anything about it's appearance over time.

this is true it is the pound for pound lightest and strongest leather available, use mainly in football boots and other sporting footwear

I'd look at either a thin bridle leather, 2-2.5 mm or more likely an aniline died panel hide in a light shade. Pig skin would also be good and is very tough and quite pretty. Saddlery leather will tend to wear both the best and the most gracefully in my experience as its designed for high wear applications. The thickness you need will depend on the construction technique your planning

Segals of Califonia is a good American supplier of leather, though I dont know if they will deal with the public. There are lots of others in the States if not.

Well, I've certainly received enough suggestions to keep myself busy for quite some time, thank you all! And Charlie, I appreciate the recommendation for Segals, I was considering placing an order with them a few days ago, but I will certainly be doing so now. At the moment I'm considering the aniline died panel hide and pig skin, since I prefer there to be a bit of substance to my leather goods. I'll be sure to post some photographs of the finished product(s) sometime in the future, so you all can have the opportunity to gather a few ideas from my experiments, or at least have a little fun critiquing it!
