During an extended business trip, I am going to be attending an event in London. The event is "traditionally black tie" but black tie is not "required." There is a remote possibility that I could cram my tuxedo into my bag but there is no way I can bring another pair of shoes. I, therefore, have two choices, a) Wear black, cordovan punch-cap balmorals with a tuxedo or b) Wear a dark business suit. The first is extremely incorrect. The second is, sartorially, anyway, fine but makes no effort to comply with the tradition surrounding the event. Both of these are sins but I'm wondering which is the lesser. I'm particularly interested in the opinions of our English members. This is a clothing site. How juicy did you think it was going to be?

Buy some formal shoes in england. Ship them home after using them.

Solves your black tie and your luggage constraint issues. You did not mention if there would be any kind of budgetary limits.

If this is causing you anxiety, why not mail your formal shoes to your hotel in advance?

Blacktie means blacktie in the UK. No way out, unfortunately. Here are some options:

1) Buy opera pumps in the UK.
2) Buy them here and surprise yourself by packing your bag more effectively.
3) Buy a bigger bag.
4) Wear black shoes on your trip instead of cordovan (added benefit - you'll look like less of a rube in London).

Not very, but I had hoped for a real ethical dilemma. A question on shoes/suits is not an "ethical dilemma." Its just a question on shoes/suits.

with ethics on the line, I assumed you going to ask if we thought it would be okay for you to buy shoes in England, wear them at the event, then return them the next day.

Tie patent plain-toe oxfords around neck while traveling.
