I like the pictures where you can see a comfortable chair or a window seat: somewhere you can picture someone reading. It makes the spaces seem more complete and lived in, somehow.

Bookshelves should hold books and facilitate organization. They also shouldn't be out of place or in the way. Aesthetics are a subordinate concern -- bookshelves tend to look like books. There's little more pretentious than seeing La comedie humaine indenting a conspicuously eye-level shelf two up from Chicken Soup for the Soul.

Great link, thanks. Am enjoying it a lot since I'm quite bibliophile myself. I only have a small city apartment but its quite full of books, too!

really inspiring stuff. i'm only 19 but that's a big dream of mine -- to have a really vast library full of the books i love. i really like alot of the setups on that site. right now i don't have many books (and several of them are random fiction/fitness/clothes books) but i read each of these and i have a pretty simple book setup:

Looks cool but makes it a real bugger to find anything.

I just love built-in shelves. Simple, clean, efficient.

Not that bad really. I once had my ~2000 records sorted by color. It wasn't too tough to find things.

With little effort, I bet you could set up some sort of excel template to look up something.

There is something chic about the Ikea Billy bookcase.
