My God, NYC is high priced.

Admittedly, it's been a long time. But in 1972, my employer rented me a bedroom in a huge townhouse at 39 E. 68th ( between Park and Madison ) for $200 a month with kitchen privileges et al.

What the heck would something like that cost now?

As to living inexpensively, come to Houston. You could get a decent apartment for yourself inside the 610 Loop for $750, which is good. Or for $1,500 ( you and a roommate ), you could get a really nice place in one of the best parts of town. Such as the River Oaks, Tanglewood, or Memorial Park areas.

A) For a 1BR share..prob close to 2K!
B) But then you would be in Houston!

Isn't Houston where all the fatties are?

NYC prices are generally insane...it's sad but true. Unless you're making big timer money, saving while living in Manhattan or the choice neighborhoods in Brooklyn is very difficult, roommates become a necessity, and you have to compromise on Price, Quality, and Location.

A bedroom in an apartment, not a 1BR. No way anyone would pay $2k for a bedroom, unless there's also spacious and impressive common areas that he could use.

Yep. That's what I mean. BR + common area.

[odoreater]Why settle for a broom closet or living with roommates in NYC when for the same cost you can get a nice house with a yard in New Jersey?[/odoreater]

Shouldn't Jersey be a serious option?

It would be if the question was not where to live in NYC

I don't recall Jon. saying that living in NYC was a condition of his employment or anything like that. It sounds like he may need additional options if he doesn't want to live with roommates.

transportation can be a *****, yes, but I really like Greenpoint. Great bars, great Polish food, and some rooftop decks have superb views of Manhattan. I used to always visit friends there after work on Fridays, their 3 BR was something like $1800 a month. If you're working in Manhattan and close to an E train, might be worth a look.

I took the trade off 38 years ago and have never looked back.

Well, there's at least one happy ***** I know of. AFAIK Houston is up there with Atlanta and Vegas as good strip club cities. Some non-fatties in those clubs

It was a small bedroom in a serious big town home. He used it both as a NYC residence and as the Law Firm location. I'm pretty sure the TH is still there at 39 E. 68th. My God, if they tore that place down for the dirt they would have had to build a $25,000,000 structure to justify it I think.

My gf's sister lives in a studio on 77th and central park and pays around 1700, although I hear she got a great deal.

Just up to 5 years ago I rented a similar garden level apt in a townhouse on a historical block in Harlem for $500 a month.

Dependent on the individual's income amazing apartments can be had. I know individuals that live in/around Trump city that pay less than $1K monthly on 2-3 bedrooms.

Were you getting a below market "brother-in-law' deal.

Even in 1972 the TH owner was doing me a favor for $200/month.
