Was wondering if there are many Android users on this forum. I have the first Android phone G1 but it's quickly becoming a brick to me and am in search of a new phone. I was going to get the HTC EVO until I saw it in a store and it's way too big for me. I have to carry around two phones (work Blackberry) and love the native google applications on the Android OS. I've resolved to the fact that I'll have to learn to type on a virtual keyboard, since the options out there with real keyboards aren't so good.

Does anyone own a Nexus One?

I have the HTC Eris from Verizon. I can't imagine using a different provider. I'd get the incredible, if I was buying now. The incredible is basically the updated Eris.

I pay $75 a month now after taxes on AT&T for unlimited data/450 talk/unlimited txts. My data plan is grandfathered in at $20 a month, so I kind of don't want to lose that. an equivalent plan on TMobile would be $80 before tax (probably around $100 after)

I think Sprint is also about $70/month all inclusive, which is a great deal, but I don't want the EVO due to the size and from what I've heard of the battery life. Thanks.

I'm in a **** position. I could buy a Nexus 1 off CL or ebay for $400, or get it for $179 and a 2 year tmobile contract. I wonder if I can make my G1 last a bit longer until some better phones come out.

Got the Nexus One from T-Mob. 450/unlim/unlim After taxes and fees, its $91 a month. Was paying $105 a month with AT&T for the same plan. So, not a huge difference, but it's $170 I'm not paying. Plus I got the phone I wanted at $179 instead of $599. Thats a pretty significant savings.

I read your comments in the Nexus One thread that was linked here earlier, they've been super helpful to me so thanks. how's your battery life? I'm not a supetwitterer/facebook user, but I do use the web and would use GPS from time to time.

what happens if your phone has a defect? Will they send you a new phone first or do you have to send yours in and wait until they receive it? ATT does the former.

Battery life is, with everything turned off (Wifi/GPS/SYNC/low screen) capable of about... six hours of heavy use. Games/web browsing/NAV/texting/Pandora. Intermittent use will stretch that to around a full day.Probably about 1.5 days of standby with a few phone calls. With everything on, you are probably looking at about half that. Not great, but pretty standard for a smartphone.

If you are super concerned about that, I'd hold off until the 23rd or whenever the Nexus One is supposed to hit T-Mob stores. Right now there really isn't very good support from Google. You basically put down a $500 deposit and Google sends you a refurbished replacement phone as you send yours back to them. This obviously, is pretty unsatisfactory for most people. I assume that in a few weeks when they start stocking them in brick and mortar stores that this policy will change and they will be dealt with like any other T-Mobile phone. It's possible that FroYo will actually be available by that point too, which might help with the battery life. As a note: There are a few issues with the Nexus One that may or may not be fixed with the Android update. 1: touch keyboard occasionally glitches. Might insert multiple letters. (go to type "cow" and it ends up being "ccccow" or something like that. Haven't noticed it much in web browsing. Mostly just typing on the virtual keyboard. (I miss my keyboard) 2: Occasionally the phone will drop 3G signal for apparently no reason. It might be "sleeping" or whatever. Aside from quickly putting it into and then out of "airplane mode" - I haven't found any reliable way to keep it from doing this a couple times a day. This is one of the things that FroYo is supposed to fix. Relatively minor annoyances to me. Maybe major annoyance to someone else - But I'm pushing my phone pretty hard sometimes, playing 3D games on it while streaming music and having texts pop up. Etc. I will tolerate an occasional hiccup. Your mileage may vary.

There are so many good phones coming out. It seems like every other month, there's a new super droid from somebody. Other than the Droid X, which looks freaking awesome, Samsung also has one coming to a couple of carriers near you.

Can't wait to see what these phones can do in the next year or two.

In other news, though, Verizon is thinking about getting rid of their unlimited plan, like AT&T. I'm probably going to be grandfathered in since I currently have a Vz contract, but this trend of charging people more money for less bandwidth while data requirements are continuing to go up because of new mobile web technologies is complete bullshit. /end rant

Trust me. I feel your pain. I remember when carriers started charging for text messaging, which up until then was free.

I just upgraded from an HTC Magic running Android 1.6 to the HTC Legend running Android 2.1 with the HTC Sense interface. I was very happy with the Magic (other than the rubbish camera) and the Legend seems to be better in every respect, with a stunning design. The aluminium 'unibody' construction really is beautiful and feels very solid. I considered the HTC Desire for the upgrade (essentially HTC's own version of the Nexus One) but the form factor and design of the Legend were decisive in its favour.

If you make use of Google's online services for mail etc., I can't imagine anything better than Android for a mobile device.

I cyanogen'd my G1 and I'm really not a techie person, so no doubt you could do it. I did it for the same reason as you, to stretch it out til something better comes along (on T-Mobile.)

So I called ATT today and if I bought the HTC Aria they'd give it to me for $100 and waive the $18 upgrade fee. I get to keep my current plan, but i'll have to sign a 2 year agreement. from what I've read the Aria has the same innards as the Legend but in a smaller package. Also no side-loading of apps, you have to download them from the Market. I've seen that the Aria's already been rooted, but I'm not that Android savvy. the smaller screen size makes me a little concerned about typing, as I'm already scared about switching from a physical keyboard, but since this is a 2nd phone I have to carry around the smaller size is kind of a plus. Maybe once they start offering the Nexus one in stores I'll jump but for now I'll do what others are doing and try to keep my G1 going until better options come along.
