Got two Perform Better 1-pood competition bells during their free shipping sale. They were ~$75 apiece plus tax, yellow with bare metal handles. The handles are smooth but grippier than my Dragon Door kb. I think it would take chalk well.
The longer handle (or larger curve of the kb) feels a lot better for presses - it rests further from my wrist.

My girlfriend lost her gym membership owing to being broke. Think a 35# bell (the extra DD) would be too heavy to teach an average woman (5'6" about 130ish, not particularly strong) to swing?

A 20lb was enough for my girlfriend (5'7" 120ish). She's fairly fit- can do a couple pullups, a respectable number (20 something) of real pushups, and it busted her ass.

Is chalk a fairly good solution for the grip on kettle bells? They've been tearing my hands up- build callouses one day and tear them off the next sort of thing.

If the handle is tearing up your hand, I don't think chalk would help - I assume yours are rough cast iron? I've seen it used on competition bells with smoother handles to give more grip for high-rep snatches/etc. but not to help rough handles.

Because balancing weight is proven to be just as important to your muscles as lifting weight.

If the bell is painted, stripping the handle and maybe sanding/filing it smooth may help with the ripped callouses.

Yer doing it wrong. Proper form lets you snatch, clean, etc without damaging anything.

I figured that the chalk might lubricate the grip, but if that's not the case, I'll stick to my wool gloves. They're cast iron, and though 90% of it has been smoothed down by yours truly, there is a seam on the underside of the handle that is brutal and is taking forever to file down.

You should be "catching" the clean in the crook of your arm (kind of the lower shoulder/upperbicep area). Once you get the technique down, the wrist pain will go away...that is, unless the press was giving you the pain.

I'm sure you can watch some technique videos on youtube. The kettlebell C&J and the kettlebell snatch require a little different technique than you would use with a DB.
