They apparently suffer from the same syndrome as all of the modern era bands who've released one great album and get subsequently worse with each new one
(The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party among others). Listen to Turn on the Bright Lights... and you'll wonder what the **** they were doing with OLTA.

I agree with the consensus that TOBL is their best album. But I don't understand why so many people dislike OLTA. I think Pioneer to the Falls, Pace is the Trick, and The Lighthouse are at least as good as anything on TOBL. (I was actually listening to OLTA when I read your post.)
Also, I think "Lights" from the new album is really beautiful.
