I have a decent body and decent looks, or so I've been told. And several friends (and some strangers) have told me I should try modeling. I wouldn't want to be a retail store greeter or anything, but would be up for picture modeling (or whatever it's called).

My first question, then: is modeling a decent job for a college student? How's the pay (even at the low end) and work?

If I do pursue modeling, I don't know where to start.

So: are any of you male models? Where did/do you start? How can I get into it?

How do you look in patent leather and a ball gag? The pay is not terrible if you are willing to do insertions.

I starred in a few "art" films when I turned 18. Not the best looking dude but I had the specific umm "proportions" they were looking for.

I got started and got into it at a young age..

Well I guess it all started the first time I went through the second grade. I caught my reflection in a spoon while I was eating my cereal, and I remember thinking "wow, you're ridiculously good looking, maybe you could do that for a career.

I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is.

You have to live in a big city, find a good agency and go to loads of castings. The pay is generally ****** when you consider all the time spent except for a few outliers who manage to make a lucrative career of it.

Knew a 20-something who moonlighted modeling jobs, mostly print ads for things like JC Penney's etc...

I recall him saying that he (living in L.A.) was making about $20,000 a year putting a little bit of effort... meaning he was listed at an agency and spent not all that much time nudging them/reminding them he was out there hungry for work.

FWIW he's now studying at Harvard Divinity.

OP, you may want to reconsider.

Have had several friends who modeled. Cary Grant's advice to get listed with an agency and then let them call you is the right way to go about it.

Take some care in picking your agency as there are some scammers out there.
