My gf and I are going to Boston for the weekend. We are leaving this Friday night and coming back Sunday. We have never been to Boston and would like help on planning the weekend.

As far as hotels, I was thinking of staying at the Ames Hotel in Boston. We don't really want to spend too much on the hotel.

What are some must do things and must visit places while in Boston? Also, what are some good restaurants? Sight seeing? Etc. etc.

I sort of have a man crush on Boston .. If your thing is punk shows and dive bars .. I might have some idea's, but I think that unlikely.

What is the rate you are seeing for the Ames? Just curious as you mentioned you don't want to spend too much on the hotel. The Ames isn't the first hotel that comes to mind when saving on hotel.

If you throw out some more information as to what you want to do while in town, I can offer some suggestions.

Thanks for the replies!

imschatz: I would be interested in the dive bars! As far as the gf goes, that's another story...but I would still like to know which are some decent ones for just in case...

pscolari: Ames is coming to about 200ish/night - a little on the high side. Also looked at Westin - about 450 for two nights. Sonesta is 415/two nights.... Not too familiar with location of the hotels, so I am not sure which one we will be going with. Perhaps you can give us a better idea based on location, etc.

We really have never been to Boston so I suppose we are open to anything....food, sight seeing, museums, parks....anything we can fit into our time period there would be game. I looked at zagat for the restaurants and the two on the top were La Campania and Oleana...good choices? are there must eat places?

Thanks again!

Just wanted to mention that we will be driving to Boston so we will have a car for the weekend. Getting around town shouldn't be a problem...

If it's nice this weekend I'd try walking the freedom trail.

So, where I'm from .. live music is pretty much non-existent. So, when I was in Boston my big thing was checking out the music scene .. which by comparison to my podunk town is pretty much the greatest ever. From my trip in the NE US, I found what set Boston apart from Philly, Pitt, and NY was the music.

So, my two favorites clubs/bars were:
Middle East Restaurant and Night Club on Massachusetts Ave. All sorts of music, and multiple rooms/floors all doing their own thing. Lots of really cool little bars/clubs around there as well. Mass. Ave is in between Harvard and MIT, so it's that sort of crowd.

Harper's Ferry on Brighton Ave. Again, all sorts of music so check out who's playing when your there. It's in between Boston U and Boston College. So, another very big club/bar area, but different crowd.

But ya .. I'm 24 and Canadian. So all the US history and sight seeing in Boston was really not my thing. So if thats what your after .. I have no advice.

How about DC?
