Dude you managed to play a hand where 5k was on the line?!

Yeah I got it all in KK vs QQ pre-flop. QQ has about 18% to win.

There are so many more interesting hands but I haven't played online in over a year I can't find any records.

I would play cash games quite a bit because I always did well and won money in cash games. I got pretty good at knowing when to hold em and when to fold em. If I got to the river without making a nice bet to take down the pot, I either lost my bluff, called just to see the other persons hand even though I thought I was beat to get info (only if I could afford to and the pot wasn't big enough), or won. It's just I kept getting knocked out of tourneys or losing a big pot when I made a big raise (usually after making decent to big raises beforehand) when the other person had a 4% chance to hit their card. So I just got over poker.

There's no nice way to say this so:




Ignoring all the issues in your post, at a very basic level, if you were winning at cash games and losing at tourneys, why would you ever play tourneys?

He probably hasn't played enough hands to know if he is a winner in either. It takes like a six figure sample size before you can have any confidence in your win rate.

Because I was playing for fun with money I didn't really care if I lost; playing with friends before going out for the night, in between softball games, charity tournaments, etc. If online, they were small stakes tourneys and I would have cash games going at the same time.

This. Maybe also because with cash games I could just leave whenever and with tourneys I got bored after a couple hours and was ready to just get up, leave, and go have fun doing other stuff.

i used to play alot of poker at the LA asian casinos around here (those were my dark years). i have alot of stories. funny ones. bad ones. mostly at the end i just lose it all not at poker but at pai gow or pan 9 game that i was addicted to.

i played alot of 3-6 and 4-8 at commerce and normandie. one of my memorable hands was at 7 card stud, i remember it exactly (lot of hands i remember exactly):

i had rolled up 6s. the guy next to me had 3s rolled up. the last person on the other end of the table had pocket As (this was all revealed at end of hand of course).

the betting was capped the first round and all 7 players stayed in. (lot of loose players at normandie, and it was 2-4 so it was loose), 4th street, couple people fell out, but still capped bet, 5th street 1 more person folded, bet/raise, and 6th street bet ( i was checking all the way, just slow playing that hand) and the river i get another 6 , the guy next to me gets his 3, and the last guy makes a AAA?? full house. the other person makes a straight.
i check, four 3s bets, straight calls, Aces full raises, i call, four 3s reraises, straight calls, and the Aces full guy ( a tall black fella) stands up and yells at the top of his hand "what yo mofos got???!!! and opens his hands and reveals his aces full, and starts high fiving his guys next to him. i call, and call , straight of course folds.

4 threes, gets all excited and says 'send it!" and shows the 4 threes and , then no one ever knew i had 4 6s, i say 'dam send it mofos!!" and everyone at the table was in a roar, it was like dam check this out , dam , dam! everyone was saying dam! the 4 three guy was very upset and was quiet but was like 'dam good hand wtf'
the pot was like 250 -300 bux or so, it was only 2-4 and you can only cap it and at that time they didnt have jackpot instituted yet so it kind of sucked. just one story.

ive won several jackpots at poker tables but they were always table shares. never hit it myself. but the table shares can be nice. one was like 450 bux each person table share because the jackpot was like 4500, but then it was during a redlight time where the jackpots were doubled.

To younger poker players, poker means hold'em. The game is simple on the surface and is well suited for TV. Playing it is like watching paint dry.

IMO it is much more interesting to play in a dealer's choice home game.

I used to play a lot of NL hold 'em. I was reasonably solid and peaked when I played in the $10K buy-in Aussie Millions in 2008. My first table on day two was brutal. You can view it here:

Mike Matusow two to my right. Kenna James on my left, and Kenny (Phuong) Tran two to my left. Brutal. I'm sandwiched between three big time pros and was lucky to get moved after only about an hour or so. I made it to the end of the second day and was on the bubble for cashing. It was a great experience, but I was really overwhelmed playing with pros. That was the end of my interest in big tournaments. I was out of my element, and it impacted my play.

After the tournament, I decided to dedicate myself to other games. I specialize in pot limit Omaha 8 now. I think the best advice for other players is to learn other games. You have a huge competitive advantage, because most players only understand hold 'em. There are so many other great games out there, and they all require very different types of knowledge.

Seriously, can we get a SF table going? Im only on Pokerstars though..
