+1 I thought it was just me. The missing jailed brother and the street musicisn get way too much air time

Sunday's episode was an entertaining cameo-fest: Roy Blount, Jr. (congratulating John Goodman's "Creighton Bernette" character on his YouTube rant chefs Wylie Dufresne, David Chang, Eric Ripert and Tom Colicchio; musicians Kermit Ruffins, Steve Earle and Rebirth Brass Band; David Morse (as the cop who met with Melissa Leo's "Toni Bernette" character) and Tim Reid (as the judge; he also created and starred in Frank's Place, a woefully underappreciated 1980s series that was set in New Orleans; and Davis Rogan (the real-life inspiration for Steve Zahn's "Davis McAlary" character).

Great show... makes me need a trip to Nola BAD. Too bad I miss Jazz Fest every year b/c I am addicted to Derby. Where are my priorities?

As much as everyone here wants to give anyone affiliated with The Wire a rusty trombone (everyone was watching it when it was actually on TV right?) this show is destined to go the way of the sophomore HBO series slump. See: David Milch-Deadwood/John from Cincinnati.

For some reason the "chef scene" annoyed me.
I really enjoyed tonight's episode.

Heather Havrilesky wrote in Salon that she is tired of the celebrity cameos (specifically citing the chef scene) and the "overwritten outbursts" by Steve Zahn/"Davis McAlary" and John Goodman/"Creighton Burnette" (who lives in New Orleans IRL). I think that the cameos are OK when not overdone and incongruous (e.g. Steve Earle in last night's episode - he wasn't there to play "Steve Earle: Famous Musician"; rather he played an ordinary New Orleanian). While the McAlary character is over-the-top (well, so in the city itself in many ways), I enjoy Burnette's YouTube rantings - righteous anger.

I like both McAlary and Burnettes characters, they are fun and most of the celebrity cameos seem to fit, aside from the chefs.
I was surprised by the amount of deaths in the show last night. I can't wait until the next episode.

Overall, enjoying it. Seems to somehow catch that lyrical, non-linear aspect that seems to inhabit NOLA. The "Indian" culture bit is interesting to me also and I like the actor playing "Big Chief" from The Wire.

Would pay good money to punch the Steven Zahn character though.

I thought the Elvis Costello cameo worked perfectly, probs because he was playing himself, as a musician, doing musician stuff. On the other hand, the celebrity chef cameo felt so fake - it was as if they walked right off the set of Top Chef and into another TV show.

I'd rather punch the junkie musician for his ill-treatment of the violinist.

I figure a bag of chronic and some brownies would shut up Zahn's character and keep him out of my way.

I think y'all are missing the point of the chefs cameo - I think it's a metaphor - The whole world wanted to help NOLA - celebrities were showing up left and right. These guys told her she "blew their mind" Where are they now that she's broke and closing her restaurant?

Good point. A talented hottie like that always seems to end up with an abusive loser for some reason I can't fathom.
